Virginia Mill Works Co.- 1/2" x 5" Tobacco Road Acacia Prefinished Handscraped Engineered Flooring- 30 Year Warranty

Colonial American homes were built with wooden floors that were sawn using basic hand-held tools. The hand-crafted workmanship that went into those floors can be found in Virginia Mill Works handscraped floors.

About Handscraped Flooring:
Handscraped or distressed hardwood floors have a natural worn appearance. They look like floors from the days when floors were finished by hand.

About Engineered:
Hardwood veneer layers are stacked on one another, with the grain of the adjacent layers oriented perpendicular to each other.
Because wood expands and contracts in the direction of the grain, one layer stabilizes the next, resulting in a product that is less susceptible to the effects of moisture & temperature change.

"Wooow!!!!!"
(That's what we want your neighbors to say when they see your new floor.)

Comments about Virginia Mill Works 1/2" x 5" Tobacco Road Handscraped:

We installed this flooring in our 215 sq ft living room. We used the bellawood premium underlayment and installed with a pneumatic stapler. It took us a full weekend to do, but we have never installed a floor before so take that as you may. The layer that forms the tongue runs perpendicular to the length of the boards, and was very splintery, but overall the installation was not difficult.
The product is beautiful! We chose it because the combination of the tobacco road colors and the handscraped finish is just stunning. It is very likely that we will purchase more of this flooring to do the rest of the first floor in our home.

    Service and delivery comments:

We picked our flooring up at the store. Both Brandon and Kyle were very helpful and knowledgable about their products.

Kaleb and Sabestian in Bakersfield Lumber Liquidator were most helpful from beginning to the end of the project. The professional installer, Mario Castro and his team members, did an excellent job. I would recommend them to anyone. Bravo!
Though easily scratches, Pledge orange oil takes care of it right away!!!

Comments about Virginia Mill Works 1/2" x 5" Tobacco Road Handscraped:

This floor ranges from very light streaks to very dark pieces. There is a lot of variation between each board, even the same board can be very light and very dark. We ordered 20% extra and still had to use extremely light pieces and pieces that didn't even look like the same wood. The waste pieces we did throw away had green and gray in them.

Although the brand is "Virginia Mill Works," the boxes say this flooring is made in China. We thought the quality was sub-par compared to early reviews of this product. As I recall, earlier reviewers' pictures showed a more uniform color throughout the product, as does the sample picture. Recent reviewers show accurate pictures: lots of streaks. If you would like a more uniform product color, I'd recommend another choice.

The installers also mentioned that the boxes included lots of short pieces and not enough long pieces (another cost-saving measure). Perhaps LL is using a new factory or supplier that is cutting corners.

The finished product still looks nice, thanks to a good installation job and eliminating the light streaks where possible-- just not as nice as earlier reviewers' pictures or the model picture shown above. Be prepared for the wide variation in color between boards.

                • Q:

We are considering putting engineered handscraped in a cabin.
The cabin will be unused and unheated for 3 to 4 winter months.
Outside temperatures will be a low a zero degrees F.
Are there any issues or concerns we need to be aware if we chose to install engineered flooring ?

                  • CUSTOMER CARE

                    A:

Wood flooring is a dynamic material subject to changes in dimension as a result of changes in humidity in the surrounding environment. It is recommended that the rooms that will have refinished wood installed be climate controlled with temperatures of 50 to 80 degrees F., preferably 65 to 75 degrees F. humidity of 35% to 55% maintained. In addition, the rooms should not be closed off from a normal air flow. Therefore with prefinished flooring, you will experience problems in a non-environmentally controlled area. Our most stable flooring is our engineered, bamboo, and laminate. They too recommend climate control in their expressed warranty's.

Urethane finish can't handle the dimensional changes that take place with extreme environmental shifts, HOWEVER you can use an unfinished hardwood (preferably quarter/rift sawn) finished with tung or other natural oils as with covered porch flooring. These site finished penetrating sealers expand and contract with the flooring without cracking.

For general cleaning a swiffer type system works best. Not one that sprays the floor however. Lightly damp is fine but never soak or flood mop your floor. Do not use steam mops. Have a no shoes policy as much as possible. Use felt pads on all furniture. Sweep often.

Bellawood Cleaner works well, find here - http://www.lumberliquidators.com/ll/s/flooring-molding-tools-accessories/floor-care-products

In addition, Bona Kemi makes a decent hardwood flooring cleaner.

Do not use oil-type cleaner of any kind.

We can only recommend our Bellawood Floor Cleaner, or cleaners that are safe for water based urethane finishes. Never use any polish, wax, oil soaps or cleaners that add shine to the floor. In addition, we do not recommend using steamers or wet-jet cleaning systems for hardwood because spraying can collect moisture in between board edges. The use of these products is at your own risk.

All natural wood products can scratch or dent. A good finish can help but even a premium finish like this may. While our finishes are some of the best in the business they will scratch as will any. If all precautions are taken ie, "Have a no shoes policy as much as possible. Use felt pads on all furniture. Sweep often." then there isn't a problem, however when you factor in pets, shoes with debris in treads, etc., no finish will completely withstand certain stresses.

If your floor becomes scratched or dull, repairs can often be made using our "Blend Stick" floor repair putty. Other Options; our "Scratch Away" works well and is easily applied (SKU 10021566)

                  Hello,

I plan on installing the engineered handscraped tobacco road on a wood subfloor on the second story of my house. The Bellawood Premium Underlayment was a recommended underlayment from the local LL store. Upon reading the installation guide for the engineered floor, it recommends 15# black roofing paper or silicone vapor shield paper. I like the sound deadening properties of the Bellawood Premium Underlayment. Will this particular underlayment work?

                • Q:

                  Hello,

I recently purchased approximately 800-SF of the HS engineered tobacco road flooring (at least according to the sticker on the side of the box). Once in the house and opened for acclimation, I was surprised to find the lack of color variation in the boards as compared to the hardwood sample in the local store. The engineered floor I purchased had really no blond streaks/boards as compared to the full hardwood sample in the store. I know the engineered is different that the full hardwood, but I thought the top layer of engineered was the exact same material as the full hardwood. So my question is, does the engineered flooring have little or no blond coloring that the full hardwood does? The engineered appears to be slight variations of brown with no blond variations as the full hardwood does.

                    A:

Being a natural wood product the color variation can vary from batch to batch whether it is a solid or an engineered product.
I have installed both solid and engineered flooring and there are never two installs that are exactly the same.
The comparison should be made to the engineered sample at the store and not against the solid sample.
                    Thank you for your inquiry.

                  Hello
We will be installing this floor in several adjoining rooms and to keep floor visually flowing from room to room we will need to go in both directions once in the rooms.I know with solid flooring you can fabricate a wood strip that allows you to join groove to groove and change directions. Is that poosible with engineering and if so how?
