About Engineered Flooring:
Engineered flooring is constructed with a real hardwood veneer atop a moisture-resistant HDF/MDF core (high density fiberboard/medium density fiberboard) which is made from real wood fibers that are compressed into a dense, impact-resistant format. In addition to providing extra protection against denting, the HDF/MDF enables the most precise milling of the locking profile to enhance ease of use and long-term durability.

Happy with the outcome

By Projects guy

from Putnam county, NY

Pros

  • Easy To Install
  • Looks great

Cons

  • Packaging

Best Uses

  • Any Room Application

Installed in bedroom, used Quiet Walk pad underneath. Really easy to lay down, installation went quickly. Locks together very well, helps to use the mallet and scrap piece to tap soundly into place. I choose to install 3/8 plywood sub-floor over the top of my stable, but uneven, existing floor. Reading the PDF of the instructions provided by manufacturer was a very good idea prior to starting. Fairly straightforward all the way around. Will use this type of flooring again. Got a 4 star due to some damaged pieces in some packages - I seriously think it's the limited protection in the shipping boxes rather then any mis-handling along the way. A very few pieces had production blemishes/ mis-coloring, but the majority of the product was beautiful (I'm not referring to the pieces that have small amounts of factory glue residue on them - that wipes off quickly and easily with mineral spirits). Still had product to spare after the waste % was figured in during ordering process.

Service and delivery comments:

A quick word about the guys at my local Wappingers Falls store location. They could not have been nicer or more helpful! No baloney, just honest help at the store while I was considering/ evaluating various products. Ordered online and then picked it up at the store. No hassles whatsoever. Worked out great!

Terrific flooring!

Pros

Cons

  • Some Qc Misses

Really impressed with the overall finish using this product in about 850 sqft of different rooms of my condo (Bedroom, living room, closets, hallway, kitchen). We had a flood and my old berber carpeting had to go. Was able to find this floor at the local LL dealer and the price couldn't be beat (Was on sale at the time). We liked it so much that once we finished the intended areas, we decided to do the whole kitchen too (Replacing nasty old linolium).

I've never installed flooring before and decided to do this on my own. I have a few spots with some tricky angles and was worried I would mess it up, but gave it a go anyway. A sliding compound mitre saw turned out to be essential to the job, and as it turned out, a table saw as well (for long length rips when the last row has to be cut short of the wall). I also found an oscilatting tool to be helpful for getting my door jambs cut to the right height so the flooring would slide underneath for a seemless finish...it was also helpfull in cutting some of the flooring on some of the trickier cuts. Laying the flooring down was a breeze though...it just slides together and snaps in place. I really didn't need any tools to lay the floor down for the most part, but when I did, I used some scrap pieces and a rubber mallet. If you hit the flooring directly chances are you'll break up some of the tounge joints as they are a bit fragile (try not to drop pieces on the tounges either).

I combined this product with some DreamHome QuietWalk underlayment on a concrete slab and the end-result is fantastic, we are very happy with our new flooring. It seems to be holding up very well too. I was worried the dog would scratch it up a bit, but so far about 1 month in, not a single scratch anywhere.

My only real issue with the product was that in a couple of the boxes, the manufacturer got a little sloppy with the laminate glue. There were blotches/spills of it on some of the boards that required some scraping to get it off. Other than that, all the material came through just fine.

This flooring really transformed my place. I've gone from carepenters-grade berber mediocrity to rich-toned elegance...and best of all it all came in under budget!

Service and delivery comments:

Delivery was a bit of an issue for me. I order my product online in early September and was told it wouldn't arrive until mid-December. After a few emails to support, I was able to get them to ship the product from another store to my local store. One box was severly damaged upon delivery, but the guys at the West Allis, WI LL store took good care of me by having a new box delivered to my home two days later.

I'm still a bit up in the air on what to do at some of my transitions, and what to do for new baseboards, and unfortunately the younger inexperpienced staff at the LL store weren't much help. I explained my situation and all they really did was try to search for something on the website...they didn't offer to show me any samples or offer any sort of options. They were pleasent enough to work with, but they seem to need a little more experience in the field.

I got this flooring at $2.19/sq ft.
I heard some online negative reviews about Mayflower flooring.
But this flooring seems more scratch resistant than some high grade flooring at my old house.
It's very easy to install.
I only had one piece out of 800 sq ft that had a blemish.
There was some delivery issues, but the manager at my store went to bat for me and got it to his store quickly.

                        A:

Despite today's advanced technology, water spills, dirt and other abrasive substances can damage a wood floor's finish. Location, traffic patterns, how often the floor is vacuumed and cleaned, children and/or pets are all factors that influence wear and durability.
Birch is one of the "softer hardwoods".

                        RADIANT FLOOR HEATING
                        1. Follow the instructions from the supplier of the floor heating system.
                        2. Concrete subfloors must be installed and cured a minimum of 60 days.
                        3. The heating system must be in operation for at least two weeks before installation to dissipate any residual moisture. During installation, the system may be turned off or set to a suitable installation temperature 60 -80°F, humidity 30 -50%.
                        4. Adjust the heating system gradually, start at the lowest setting and gradually increase the heat by 5 degree increments each day. The heating surface temperature must not exceed 85°F. Add humidification as needed.
                        5. Over dry conditions and excessive surface heat can create problems with the finish, board gapping and splits
You can find complete installation instructions on the product page by clicking on the installation tab and then clicking on - Installation Guide.

                        A:

Full refinishing will take slightly under a 1/32” off the veneer of the wood flooring. The thickness of the veneer and how much wear and dents a floor has will determine how many times it can be refinished.
Engineered flooring with a 1/8” wear layer or more will be able to be refinished at least once. If the engineered product has a 1/16” wear layer a professional sander may be able to refinish it, but many won’t take the chance in case they make a mistake and take too much off the wear layer. We recommend that hardwood floor refinishing be done by a professional and if your not sure if you can refinish your flooring have professional sand and finish expert come to your home and evaluate your flooring. Thank you for your inquiry.

                        A:

Our wood floors are manufactured for maximum durability, easy maintenance and finished with a high quality aluminum oxide water base urethane UV cured finish. This step protects the wood and helps keep the flooring looking beautiful longer. While highly durable, the finish is NOT considered indestructible. However, by observing a few precautions like setting up a regular cleaning routine and simple maintenance program to protect the finish, you can expect years of performance and beauty from your wood floor. All wood floors can show signs of wear over time. There are many factors that can affect the amount of wear. These include the size and lifestyle of your family and product location.
                        The following cleaning principles are recommended for all of our products -Hardwood, Laminates, Corks, Bamboo and other Exotics. Outlined are examples of the reasonable and necessary maintenance to be performed; this is only intended to be a basic list;
                        • Immediately after installation, be certain that the flooring is completely cleaned and dry as described below. If you must protect the flooring from traffic, use only “craft” paper, brown, red or white, this will allow the flooring to “breathe”. Do not fully cover the flooring. NEVER lay plastic of any kind or any other non-porous material over the flooring as this can trap moisture, harm the flooring or fade the finish.
                        • Sweep or vacuum regularly, since built-up dirt, grit and sand can damage the surface of the wood. If using a vacuum, use a soft brush attachment -NOT A BEATER BAR ATTACHMENT. Be certain the wheels of the vacuum are clean and do not damage the finish. When using a broom be certain that bristles are soft. You can also use a dry mop.
                        • Because of the myriad of cleaning products available and methods of each application, Lumber Liquidators cannot endorse or oversee the use of any Brand Name of floor cleaner. We do recommend cleaning products safe for urethane finishes such as our Bellawood floor cleaner and Dream Home Cleaner.
                        • The use of a changeable terry cloth type system to clean the floor is highly recommended; apply cleaning solution to the terry cloth.
                        • NEVER use oil soaps or paste wax products or other household cleaners that contain lemon oil, Tung oil, silicone, or ammonia on pre-finished flooring. The use of these products will harm the long-term performance and appearance of your floor and may affect future re-coating. (Damages caused by non-recommended cleaning products are not covered by warranties). NOTE: This also includes the use of vinegar. Vinegar is an acidic element that can have an oxidizing, caustic effect on the finish.
                        • In an effort to clean hardwood floors, many have experimented with a variety of cleaners on the market and end up with a new problem. “How to remove the build-up of cleaning products revealing the original surface"? If this is the case with you, we recommend consulting with a professional cleaner local to your area because they can best see the details involved and make the most accurate recommendations. If you choose to remove the layers of build-up yourself, use cotton rags instead of a mop to control the amount of liquid used.
                        • NEVER wet-mop or flood your floor with water or any other product. Moisture can seep into the seams causing edge-cupping damage. Urethane floors do not require wet mopping. Natural floors are water resistant, not water proof. Remove all spills promptly using a soft, slightly damp cloth
                        • STEAM CLEANERS ; Lumber Liquidators does not recommend Water brooms or steamer type cleaners on laminates, bamboo, engineered wood, corks or hardwood floors. Although steamers may work well cleaning OTHER types of hard surface flooring, the 130° to 240° heated steam vapor can ruin wood or urethane finish resulting in finish issues, warped, or cupped flooring. Water and wood do not mix well, especially steam. Use these products at your own risk.
                        • Do place protective mats at entry doors to keep dirt, grit, sand and moisture from being track in from the outside.
                        • Do use area rugs in heavily traveled areas and pivot points (e.g., stair landings, room entries, etc.), especially if you have a large family or indoor pets.
                        • When using area rugs, use a rug pad with a felt, plant or PVC based backing. DO NOT use area rugs with a petroleum based rubber backing (typically black) as this can cause permanent chemical staining/etching of the floor finish.
                        • Take reasonable precautions; use a dolly and protective sheets of plywood when moving heavy objects such as furniture and appliances.
                        • Place protective pads beneath furniture legs and feet to reduce scratches and dents. Check and replace wore pads regularly.
                        • Keep pet’s nails trimmed, and paws clean and free of dirt, gravel, grease, oil, and stains.
                        • Scratches, dents and cupping are site related, not considered a manufactured defect

Radiant Heat Systems (all installation methods) Squeaks, gaps, cupping, delaminating, splits, and checks created due to radiant heat systems over drying the wood are not covered under the warranty. It is very important to maintain proper indoor humidity levels. General Precautions and Recommendations Always use moisture barriers. Engineered flooring can be successfully applied over in-floor radiant heat. Know the species you intend to use and how it may interact with radiant heat. Not all species are recommended for this installation; choose species highest in stability ratings for this application. Brazilian Cherry flooring is not recommended for this application.
Because of the wide array of systems on the market, each with its own features, please consult with your radiant flooring provider for recommended installation methods. Hydronic systems must include in-floor temperature sensors and an outdoor thermostat that allows

Use of a humidification system may be required to maintain the proper humidity level. The indoor relative humidity must be maintained between 30-50% year round. Failure to do so can result in edge cupping, squeaking delamination, splintering, or face checking.
