Can this tread be stained and sealed? I see the edge is rounded, do I have to use a nose or would the tread by itself over my existing stairs offer a finished look?

The current width of my stairs is 37.5" wide. Will I need to get a 48" width? If not, what do I need to do with the extra 3/4" on each side?
