Comments about Williamsburg Butcher Block Co. 1 1/2" x 25" x 8 lft American Cherry Butcher Block:

I added a couple of base cabinets to my kitchen but didn't want to change the existing countertops. Using butcher block on the new cabinets was a beautiful way to avoid a mis-matched look. The cherry wood has accepted the mineral oil and become more beautiful every time more is applied. And the price was unbeatable.

These are great counters in our kitchen. They have a timeless feel.

    Service and delivery comments:

Prompt service but they did not inform us these counters came in different colors. We wanted ours to look like the sample in the store. I pointed out to the sales rep. What we found out after delivery and the counters were very light they come in light or dark. When purchased the rep never mentioned this. We would have preferred the darker version.

Comments about Williamsburg Butcher Block Co. 1 1/2" x 25" x 8 lft American Cherry Butcher Block:

Very good product. Only one side is factory finished for use. The bottom side could be finished if neccessary by consumer. Grain raised even after many coats of oil when it got wet with water or steam. Was able to sand and reapply oil without issue however. Recommend "pre wetting" the entire surface a few times before oiling or finishing to raise grain and sand smooth. This is typical of some wood products. Overall I liked the product and would recommend and use it again.

I am a contractor so I knew what I was getting into. The reason this butcher block counter top is about 1/2 the price as elsewhere is because of the preparation required before it is of usable quality. If you have the skills it works great after you get it up to snuff.

The change of my counter tops from
Formica (yuck) to the cherry butcher block has even made my builder grade cabinets look much better. Anticipate living with a surface that is more user friendly as well as being so attractive is going to be all I had hoped.

I needed a simple and inexpensive countertop and didn't want to use big-box hardware store laminate counters as they didn't match. The butcher block looked good and with some work I was able to get a decent finish. My only real complaint is that there was a lot of filler in some key places - along edges that would be exposed, etc. If that filler wasn't there, this would be an EXCELLENT countertop. I found a great beeswax bowl finish to apply rather than tung oil and it looks great, water beads nicely and it is easy to re-coat and touch-up any nicks.

My wife really likes it, so in the end all good.

                  Service and delivery comments:

Product was in stock and took it home right away. Staff could be a little more friendly.

It could, however it would be a very thick backsplash which may get in the way of sinks, etc.

Two sections can be joined together.
                      1) For a good glue edge bond; using a straight edge guide and saw recut 1/2"or so off one side of each piece you are joining.
                      2) For center support and strength; Use a biscuit jointer or doweling jig, then wood glue the edges and bar-clamp til dry, re-sand. Add proper support to the completed counter to help support the seam joint.

Yes, the butcher block is completely safe. During construction, wood strips are bonded together using a non-toxic, high-grade water soluble PVA adhesive used for many years in the wood industry. The adhesive is Multibond 3215.

The countertop could hold much much more weight than 80lbs. The cabinets should be able to as well as most kitchen cabinets can hold large slabs of granite or marble countertops.

When cutting the american cherry butcher block to fit my counter (I need 60 inches), do I sand the cut end to give it a finished look. I don't want it to look like it was cut.

Any cut that will be exposed should be sanded with a a hand block sander or finish sander until smooth. In addition edges can be routed with a router with a quarter round bit.

What is the minimum edge, fromt to back required for a sink cutout? How much room is needed for expansion of countertop for a kitchen sink cutout? Do you have complete guidlines for installation on the web or can be sent to me? Thanks for your time.
