      12' Select grade maple butcherblock

      By Jimbo

      from Brea

Comments about Williamsburg Butcher Block Co. 1 1/2"x 25" x12 lft Maple Butcher Block Countertop:

The select grade maple countertop only has one good surface as the underside has many gaps, missing pieces. The "good" side has many defects such as knots. Nevertheless, it provides a hard smooth surface as a bench top.

      Service and delivery comments:

I picked up from store and the clerks were friendly and helped me to load the very heavy item. It is over 100 lbs.

The counter was near perfect out of the box. Required a little hand sanding. Looks spectacular with a few coats of Howard butcher block oil and conditioner.

        Service and delivery comments:

Picked up at the store. One guy opened on a Saturday and answered the phone, wrote up orders, answered questions and ran the warehouse! We had to wait a little too long but he results were worth it.

                        A:

There are several options on sealers for butcher block countertops. To read about these in detail; type "Butcher" here - http://www.lumberliquidators.com/ll/flooring/Flooring101

See - "How can I care for my new Butcher's Block Counter Top?"

Products used to seal and protect Butcher's block counter tops are divided into two simple categories, top coatings or penetrating sealers. Ultimately, the choice of which products to use depends greatly on the intended use of your counter top. Top coatings such as urethanes are more for decorative aesthetics. Penetrating sealers such as Tung nut oil, Linseed or mineral oils seep into the wood preserving and condition it. Penetrating sealers offer more versatile usage of Butcher's block counter tops allowing for safe food preparation, easy repairs and can be buffed to a gloss with a build up of 5 or more layers.

Yes this can be done by using biscuit joinery or dowels "glued up" & clamped to join the two slabs together.

                    • Q:

I'm looking at the 25" wide maple butcher block for a bartop. I need the piece to be 16-18" wide. It doesn't look like any of the butcher block tops are available in that width. Can these be cut length-wise on a table saw or are there any risks of splitting? Would a cut need to be made on a seam within the butcher block?

I'm wanting to top a stand alone piece in my kitchen (a buffet) so that it's a useful part of the kitchen both for prep and serving. It's around 56 inches long- so- is it ok to cut the piece to length? what specific tips/tools are needed, is it anything different since it's butcherblock and not, say, one solid piece of wood?
                      thanks.
