Great walnut countertop for the price. After searching high end wood counter places and getting very high quotes, I was happy to find Lumber Liquidators. Great value for the walnut butcher block counter. Looks great in our study on the built-ins and should wear well with the kids!

I had a professional carpenter install two slabs of this butcher block on a 10x5 ft. kitchen island. The two pieces are stunningly beautiful, and it is almost impossible to see the seam where the two pieces were merged. That said, installing these is not for the meek-at-heart, and it took a professional 1.5 days for all the cutting, biscuit joining, wood filling, sanding, and routing.

Used to make a table top

I made a kitchen table top out of this counter top. I cut the counter top in half, planed the edges and plate joined together. I didn't care for the visible joints on the side boards so I found a specialty lumber yard that sells 4/4 walnut boards, cut to size, and joined to sides of table. After lots of sanding and a waterlox finish, it's beautiful! Didn't need to use any filler. I literally saved over $1,000 for a table top by going this route.

This is a great product for those that are prepared to put in time and effort (and have the ability) to make it beautiful. It is unfinished out of the box.

cut the 12'er in half and glued it up for a large kitchen island.

But I had to use a table saw and jointer to make the glue up joint square.

also had to scrape out and re-fill the (many) voids with dark walnut putty

My countertop was in great condition when it arrived. It was as close to perfect as I could have hoped. Based on other reviews, I was prepared with a bottle of wood filler to prep the piece before I started staining, but it wasn't necessary. There were a few tiny holes near each end, but they weren't worth filling. I was using this as a bar top, and stained it pretty dark to match the trim in the room. I wish I had gone lighter, because it took the stain so well that it didn't leave as much grain as I'd have liked. I can't blame that on the coutertop, though. Overall, I am very satisfied with the product.

                    Service and delivery comments:

I ordered the countertop from my local store. They told me it would arrive in 7-10 days according to their computer. When I pulled it up online to show my wife what I'd bought, the website showed that it was out-of-stock at the central warehouse and would be available in more than 30 days. I called the store, and they reassured me that it would be 7-10 days. Each time I called, they seemed confused about why it hadn't arrived. In the end, it took 33 days to arrive at the store... The website was right. The computer system was wrong.

We recently used these countertops in our kitchen. It is a little scary when you first get them out of the box because the color is much lighter. There is clearly a good side and a bad side. The bottom side of the counters is full of glue and fillers and other marks, but the good side was beautiful. Fine sanding and some mineral oil and they are gorgeous! LOVE

The tops have a LOT of filler and the quality is pretty bad. Tons of large, unfilled gaps that you will have to fill. On a wood species that you are staining, these deficiencies can be masked, but not on something like walnut where you are just going to clear coat.

I used this for my kitchen island to break up the use of granite on the counters. It was a little scary looking out of the box, but finished well after using a wood filler, a LOT of fine sanding and tung oil. I finished it with a tung oil/citrus solvent finish (8 coats)for a matte water resistant finish. I love the warm velvety feel of the finished wood. It's easy to maintain and looks like a piece of furniture.

                            • Q:

Are the the walnut butcher blocks solid? That is to say, are they built by joining 1-1/2" boards face to face so that the edge grain shows, and only a single board makes up the full thickness of the butcher block, or are they more of a beefed up veneer application with intermitent pieces comprising the center?

If the later is true, are the intermitent pieces also walnut? or are other species used as filler?

                              Thanks

No. However; Two sections can be joined together.

                                1) For a good glue edge bond; using a straight edge guide and saw recut 1/2"or so off one side of each.

                                2) For center support and strength; Use a biscuit jointer or doweling jig, then wood glue the edges and bar-clamp until dry, re-sand. Add a beam to the counter to help support the seam joint.

Can I use a tinted polyurthane to make it darker and to protect the unfinished walnut from stains and water?

I am considering installing this in our kitchen. How will it hold up with the sink? Is it going to be high maintenance? I may be installing an undermount sink so want to be sure this will not be an issue?

We picked up our butcher block last night. It looked nothing like the pictures online(very grey), but the manager said it is unfinished. That we need to sand, stain/oil, etc. What do we need to do to finish it? Also, we are installing an undermount sink. Any extra protection from water?
                              Thanks
