    Comments about R.L. Colston 3/4" x 3 1/4" Red Oak:

I thought that the quality of the product was adequate. My only problem was that I underestimated the amount of square footage that I needed. I ordered more of the same product. The new bundles that I received were not of the same quality nor the same exact width; so I had to be careful to keep the orders separate when I put them down.

    Comments about R.L. Colston 3/4" x 3 1/4" Red Oak:

Overall I loved the red oak select unfinished wood. The quality was outstanding and really saved me a lot of time when putting the floor down because most pieces were excellent .... Only had about 5 percent waste or less!! I will admit I was skeptical at first because many reviews i read are on lower grades of wood. Although you pay more for a higher quality wood it is well worth it and lumber liquidators was still the best price in town!! I have never installed hardwood before but I followed the directions that are on the lumber liquidators website and it came out beautiful!! It was slow going at first to make sure the first 3 rows were absolutely straight ..... Since my wall was not .... But after that it went pretty smoothly .... Especially using a nematic nailer .... Really sped up the process and pulls ur rows together as u go.

        Comments about R.L. Colston 3/4" x 3 1/4" Red Oak:

We installed ~400 sq ft in two kids' bedrooms, a hallway and a stairway landing, and also replaced the old stair treads and risers (stripped the stairs down to the stringers). The end result was a beautiful, unfinished floor. Very few planks were off-width, so the final installation was very tight. We used perpendicular joints between the hallway and rooms, and the fit was spectacular. We ended up with a beautiful cross-grain look. Had a pro do the final finishing (Swedish finish / 3 coats), and we couldn't be happier. We originally were going to order quarter sawn, but in my opinion, the select was probably as good as it gets, and it was in-stock.

              Comments about R.L. Colston 3/4" x 3 1/4" Red Oak:

Installed approximately 700.sf of unfinished red oak in a living room, dining room and two foyers. The price was very appealing but the quality was not up to Lumber Liquidator standards. I am very unhappy with the amount of defective boards that were in the lot that I purchased.
I have installed several thousand square feet of hardwood flooring from various manufacturers over the years and have never had this large amount of waste.
When I purchase select grade I expect it to be select.

The wood matched perfectly the red oak stair treads I bought and made a beautiful landing below and atop the stairway. It stained and varnished really well with the grain coming thru
                after sanding.

                      • Staff Reviewer

                        A:

This is a solid 3/4" product designed to be nailed to a wood substrate.
But can be installed over concrete using our Elastilon underlayment.
What you should know about Elastilon Strong
An Elastilon-backed wood floor is much faster to install than traditional nail or glue-down methods.
Elastilon Strong can be installed on new concrete floors, handling up to 3.9% moisture content. A vapour barrier of at least 6 mil PE should be used below grade and on newly poured concrete above grade where the moisture content is above 3.9%.
Laid down with a 5/8” (15 mm) expansion gap, Elastilon Strong creates a dynamic, floating floor that expands or contracts naturally with the hardwood.
Elastilon Strong has no odor and is free of volatile materials.
                        Elastilon Strong gives cushioned comfort.
1/8” (3 mm) thick Elastilon Strong has ratings of IIC 62 and STC 54.
                        Thermal resistance: R _ 0,15 (m K) / W
Elastilon Strong carries a 70-year limited warranty. Thank you for your inquiry.

All R.L. Colston Flooring is unfinished. Rustic, Natural, and Select are the grades of wood used in the manufacture of the flooring.

                        · Select - has the most uniform color with no knots and the longest average length of planks. Also referred to as Clear or First Grade

                        · Natural - has some color variation, mineral coloring and small pin knots. Also referred to as #1 Grade or Second Grade

                        · Rustic - has larger tight knots and the most color variation. Also referred to as #2 or Third Grade

I have brazilian mesquite installed in the hallway and bedrooms upstairs. I've come to find that it dents and scratches easily. I would like to install unfinished red oak downstairs in the family room (3/4 x 3 1/4). I was wondering if the red oak can be stained to match the brazilian mesquite, and how close the color match would be.

Red oak is probably the best wood species for taking a stain. A good floor finisher should have no problem matching the color and finishing this product on site.
Usually a floor finisher will provide a few different stained & finished samples for you to choose from and to decide the best match.

I plan on installing this product over a sub-floor that is constructed of 1 by 8 planks running diagonally over the floor joists (there is a basement under the floor joists). Of course there is some very slight uneveness in the planks and I was wondering if this would create any problems and if I should use any particular underlayment in this case?

                        Flat wood subfloors
                        • The final surface must be flat to within 3/16" in a 6' radius, or within ¼” in 10’. Subfloor must be securely nailed or screwed down to joists to prevent movement or squeaks. Install over 16” center-to-center joist sub-structure. Thoroughly inspect and replace existing floor or subfloor that shows evidence of water damage or structural weakness. Check for and repair any sagging or loose sections of a wood subfloor. Squeaky or loose boards should be re-nailed. An uneven or cupped wood subfloor is an indication of excess moisture, identify and correct. High spots may be planed or sanded down. Low spots should be cut out and repaired or may be filled with old pieces of firm vinyl or build up with 30 lb. black roofing paper. Do not fill low areas under naildown flooring with cement patches as these will break down over time.

This is not a good choice for a glue down install, Perhaps an engeneered prefinished product would work for your application.
