Comments about Clover Lea 3/4" x 5" Southern Yellow Pine:

only one board warped yes the ends aren't square but if you just cut each end and put the boards on the floor then the nailer can just slide them to himself just like putting down any other hardwood flooring. Iplan on doing a true whitewash finish with three coats of bono floor finish. did the whole upstairs three rooms and hallway with staircase opening to trim out in 16 hrs two guys

Comments about Clover Lea 3/4" x 5" Southern Yellow Pine:

We used this 5" pine flooring for a painted floor in a bedroom 2 years ago. We had it professionally installed and we had very little waste. I filled any open knot holes with wood filler and sanded floor with small electric hand sander, then vacuumed and went over with tack cloth to clean well. I painted each knot hole with white pigmented shellac and after proper drying time my husband painted entire floor with white pigmented shellac as a primer coat. After light sanding and cleaning, we added 2 or 3 coats of white porch paint, drying completely between each coat and sanding/dusting as needed. We added 12 inch diagonal checkerboard design in another color. This floor was labor intensive but we have been extremely pleased with it for our cottage decor and it cleans easily. The first winter boards contracted causing small cracks between boards that were previously tight, but that just added to the charm of the floor. It does dent pretty easily so we are careful with moving heavy furniture. Hope to do more floors with this wood in the future either painted or stained. Great look for economical price!

Comments about Clover Lea 3/4" x 5" Southern Yellow Pine:

Instead of telling what we tried and didn't work, I will stick to what did work.We purchased the 5" and 7" wide plank. Cut every single end off so they are straight. We wanted the rustic look so we used #8 2" black dry wall screws for the top. Take time to google installation of wide plank flooring of anything wider than 5". The nailing is different, so pay attention. Some boards might be warped, but we just pried them in, took some work and male muscles, but it went. We cut out all the knots that were more than 1/2 deep. The knots that were only less than 1/2 way deep, we filled in with wood epoxy, to keep the knot look (looks deep, but it is filled in with clear plastic). We chose to stain first then install. You must predrill before screwing down the board. We did most of the work ourselves and hired someone from church to keep us going. If we would have used flooring from a floor store with them installing, it would have cost us $12,000. We spent [$] on southern yellow pine from LL and another $1200 to pay for our friend help us install. We saved a TON of money. We are exhausted, but it turned out beautiful! My house is rustic and the floor really set things off. In the photos, I still have to put 4 coats of varathane on and do the trim, but you get the general idea of what it looks like.

Due to the poor millwork and other defects the 20% extra was used up and we had less than 5 board feet left over. Too many defects to make this cost effective.

My customers picked this product. The bundles had so many imperfections hidden in the middle two rows that I lost my 20% and with out any mis cuts I was just able to finist with two 2 foot pieces left. If you want to use this flooring add 50% to your sf.

Saved A LOT of money purchasing this floor, installing and finishing ourselves. Fits together pretty well, boards here and there took a little more effort to fit closely. Make sure to cut a small amount off end of each board to get a perfect fit with miter saw otherwise you will have gaps. Otherwise floor looks great, completed the downstairs and now may do the upstairs.

I used this for the floor in a new sunroom - although it was unfinished wood - I thought it would be the same width and the same thickness - it was not and therefore made installation very difficult. After finishing it looks okay but I would not recommend it to anyone - especially for the cost.

I used the product to replace damaged original floor boards. The wood has a nice grain but almost every board had somed defect. Knots are fine, thats expected. But the millwork was horrible. Almost every 7ft board was warped/curved/bowed. I must have had at least 30% waste. Luckily I only need the width to be 3.5" so I was able to cut most down to size and fix the poor millwork.

I'd like to use this for a porch, nailing it over an existing plywood surface.

Should it be painted if on a porch?

                                              A:

While we do not have any manufacturer's specifications on how to do ceiling or wall installations, we have had customers install on ceilings using Tongue and Groove flooring. One method used is to ring shank or screw plywood first on the rafters and then fasten flooring to plywood. Softer woods like pine, lower profile (thinner), and engineered flooring would be easier to nail over your head.

Fastening can be done with finish nailers or hand nailing. Ring shank nails can hold better than standard finish nails.

Longer average lengths like you get with our pine flooring or v-groove pine can be locally sourced at a local mill or lumber yard can be nailed to rafters on 16" centers. 24" centers could require 1x3 strapping or plywood.

                                              A:

Yes. However remember that s outhern pine is a soft wood, 37-47% softer than red oak, therefore denting can be expected and is characteristic of the species.

Care depends on what you finish the flooring with. Penetrating natural tung oil finishes like Waterlox work well as the finish moves with the wood as it expands/contracts or dents. Follow finish, manufacturers care instructions.
