I used these counter tops for use in a beach area home. They look good, and are rugged. I used a poly coat on them and will add a few more to build it up to a nice top coat. For the cost I also feel it is a bargain assuming you like a wood counter top.

Comments about Williamsburg Butcher Block Co. 1 1/2" x 25" x 8 lft American Cherry Butcher Block:

This piece was not cut straight, making all of our cuts to place this as a countertop very difficult. While the top looks fine, the bottom had a whole section of black and red glue that needed to be heavily sanded off. There were a few places where the individual piece of butcher block was not flush at all with the rest of the piece.

Compared to the 12' one I purchased, the top just didn't seem as even or smooth.

Overall these look nice, but the shotty construction made cuts harder and extra sanding was required.

Comments about Williamsburg Butcher Block Co. 1 1/2" x 25" x 8 lft American Cherry Butcher Block:

We had our hearts set on butcherblock for months before starting our remodel. After looking at several species of wood, we decided on cherry because of the richness mineral oil gives it. We are very impressed with the variation in wood tones among our slabs. We ordered 3 and were able to pick and choose our favorite pieces, which was helpful as we had to avoid the "Williamsburg" stamp on the sides of the slab. Ours required minimal sanding, as they arrived smooth without the gaps or filler that others experienced.

One thing that helps to put things into perspective when working with this product is that it is an organic product and will move with moisture. If you install over a dishwasher, you'll have to install a moisture barrier of some sort. Likewise, when you first open your box, the slab itself may be slightly warped, this is also easily fixed with added moisture to the concave side. A little bit of time and research allowed us to correct for the slight cupping issue we had upon delivery, and after about 7 months, our countertop is fairing very well with mineral oil and beeswax finishing.

Although we were lucky enough to have pieces arrive in near perfect shape, we did have to create a square edge, as every edge of ours was out of square. The bottom line is that if you can live with something that is organic and will shift with time, go with this. It is beautiful and worth the time to make it work.

It's a beautiful countertop, the wood is lovely and aside from one issue, I love it. However, we've just finished installing the first section of it. It's not flat, not 100% anyway. It's curving up in the front and back, by almost a 1/2 inch. Of course it's already cut to be installed so we're going to have to make it work, but it's frustrating that my countertops won't be level.

tough to cut, even with a new saw blade. Use a heavy duty saw if you are cutting it yourself.

Comments about Williamsburg Butcher Block Co. 1 1/2" x 25" x 8 lft American Cherry Butcher Block:

Using this product to make a butcher block top for a rolling island cart. It certainly was an 8 foot slab of 1 1/2" Cherry. However, it had major flaws when I finally got around to unwrapping it to use. One corner was broken off; this happenned before packaging. There was no matching damage to the packaging or broken piece in the wrapping. I simply cut it from the other end. Then I turned it over and discovered a fair size 2" circular rough gouge out of the good surface of the wood. I'm now having to find a filler that will look not too bad.

I wasn't happy but I am a carpenter and can make it work. I hope to buy two more slabs for the kitchen countertops but I will make the 3 hour drive to the nearest store and inspect before purchasing. If I can't inspect an unpackaged product, there will be no further sale.

Comments about Williamsburg Butcher Block Co. 1 1/2" x 25" x 8 lft American Cherry Butcher Block:

For my installation, I needed two 8-foot lengths of whatever top I decided upon. I read all the reviews here and, frankly, was concerned. It seemed that people either really loved this or really knocked it. I decided to order them since the price is truly unbeatable. When they arrived, I wondered which I would get. As it turned out, I got both. The first box I opened was the highest quality butcher block one could imagine. The slab was comprised of long pieces, contained minimal filler, was finished completely level (but still rough - more on that later) and was simply beautiful. The second was just the opposite: uneven levels, copious filler, and many, many short pieces. If that one had been the first counter top I opened, I'd have taken them both back without even looking at the second. I knew my installation allowed me to remove most of the bad parts of the second, so I kept them and the result is beautiful.

As many others have noted, you must have a basic level of woodworking skills to make this product work. By "unfinished", the description is telling you that sanding - and lots of it - will be necessary. Fortunately, an inexpensive random-orbital sander is perfect for the job. Also, from the factory the corners and edges are square and will most likely have suffered a few bumps and bruises during handling and finishing. For a nice result you'll probably want to round them over. The same sander can be used for this, but a router will be faster and provide a superior result. If you have these two tools (and a few hours time) you can use this product with a great outcome. Contractors, you'll have to evaluate the amount of extra time required versus the undeniably favorable price point. For me, this equation was resolved in favor of purchase and the result is wonderful. Thus, my recommendation for purchase is based upon an understanding of the tools and investment of time required for a similar result.

Hi. I have just ordered 3x8-foot american cherry butcher block counter tops. One will be cut in two and used for an Island, the others counter tops. My installer and I are not familiar with the install process, or the top finish treatment. I hope to eventually use a poly, or marine varnish for the top. Could you kindly send some instructions?

It could, however it would be a very thick backsplash which may get in the way of sinks, etc.

I am installing butcher block on open top cabinets. There is no blocking. Can I just use "L" brackets or do I need to install blocking as well? Also - should the butcher block be caulked to the cabinets or just screwed in?

                                BUTCHER BLOCK
Two sections can be joined together.
                                1) For a good glue edge bond; using a straight edge guide and saw recut 1/2"or so off one side of each piece you are joining.
                                2) For center support and strength; Use a biscuit jointer or doweling jig, then wood glue the edges and bar-clamp til dry, re-sand. Add proper support to the completed counter to help support the seam joint.
                                Thank you for writing in!

We are considering this for a small kitchen project. Our contractor has not worked with butcher block before. Do you have an installation guide we could provide him? Alternatively, does lumber liquidators have contractor's they specifically recommend for this type of installation. (We will be using the Oak Lawn, IL LL)

What kind of adhesive is used in joining the original stock? I need to know whether it's safe (and ideally FDA approved) for food contact and will remain intact through some moisture exposure.

Yes, the butcher block is completely safe. During construction, wood strips are bonded together using a non-toxic, high-grade water soluble PVA adhesive used for many years in the wood industry. The adhesive is Multibond 3215.

The countertop could hold much much more weight than 80lbs. The cabinets should be able to as well as most kitchen cabinets can hold large slabs of granite or marble countertops.
