Comments about Mapei Mapei Planiseal Moisture Barrier (5 Gal):

The product works as it is supposed to, but the odor is so bad while it is curing that we could not stay in condo. The installer said he uses this all the time. An added benefit of the moisture barrier is that it also acts as a good sound barrier. This was not mentioned by our sales person, who had us purchase separate sound insulation. It was careful reading on my part that discovered it is a good sound barrier too.

Comments about Mapei Mapei Planiseal Moisture Barrier (5 Gal):

Used to protect flooring from possible moisture when installed on concrete, I had thought Mapei Planiseal would soak into the concrete and harden, like sheetrock primer. Instead, it cures to become a continuous 'mat', with a somewhat spongy surface, which is impervious to water. Three cautions: it flows like mad, requiring continuous 'corralling', it adds to the thickness of the finished flooring, and it took two days to dry while even then there were locations to which you would stick if you stood too long.
While my installer said he didn't use membrane products often, I feel the added confidence provided by the Planiseal was worth the extra effort and expense.

This product was used as the vapor barrier on a concrete slab floor prior to glue down of bamboo plank flooring. Easy and fast application, a 10 x 12 room can easily be covered in less than 30 minutes after tools are assembled and you are ready to go.

Trowel on Moisture barrier and wait 24 hours per instructions. The moisture barrier is still kinda sticky, but that is how the product is designed. I troweled on the glue and installed my floor.
Easy to install and looks great.

Comments about Mapei Mapei Planiseal Moisture Barrier (5 Gal):

My only complaint is that there are just about no instructions on the can. My advice, try to apply thinly and evenly, take your time. You have little opportunity to correct humps, etc. You should not be able to see the cement floor through the grooves made by the trowel. Also, the smell is pretty bad, so be ready for at least a night or two of a smelly sleep. Open as many windows as possible.

We are not DIY'ers...our installation professional recommended we include this product since we live in Florida and there were pockets of moisture. We hope this product lives up to expectations. It seemed easy to install; was a bit smelly but not overly so. Dries in one day.

Service & Delivery comments:

We had a bad experience with the customer service at the Commerce, CA location of Lumber Liquidators. After asking specifically if we could return unused product we were told we could return anything unopened. A few days later we were told this product could not be returned due to "special pricing" although this was not reflected on the receipt or anywhere else. The customer service was rude and unhelpful.

After speaking with the 800 number for Lumber Liquidators we were promptly helped. They called the store which took the product back moments later (albeit with lots of dirty looks). The experience was night and day between the helpful customer service line and the rude service at the retail location.

Appears thatr it will serve as a good moisture barrier. Spreading and keeking the same thicknees throughout is hard. Will fool you by not appearing to dry completly. Would rather have a combition barrier and glue. Would recommend this product only because I feel it will serve as a good moisture barrier.

Here's a tip. Whenever you are not trowling, keep the trowel in a tub/tray of mineral spirits. This keeps the trowel clean and fresh. Wipe off the mineral spirits before using and trowel away.

Comments about Mapei Mapei Planiseal Moisture Barrier (5 Gal):

This product is easier to work with than the glue. I have found it best to use a plastic cup and "scoop" out a cup full and pour it in the area I am at. It spreads fast and is self leveling. If I use this product at night, it can be walked on in the morning. If you clean your tools immediately after using them you can use them over and over.

Planiseal
By macros_5Verified Purchaser from Jupiter, Florida on 8/11/2008
Pros:
Easy To Install
Cons:
Directions arent complete
Best Uses:
Hardwood Floors
Describe Yourself:
Do-It-Yourself
Bottom Line:

Comments about Mapei Mapei Planiseal Moisture Barrier (5 Gal):

I found the product easy to install however the directions were a little short on how thick it should be or how it should look when applied. But the directions do say to use the correct trowel, which I did and I just left it at that. It seemed a little thick so I called the company (Mapei) who assured me that I did it right and that was how it was supposed to look. I found them very helpful.

Messy, but still worth it.
By Stacy WoodruffVerified Purchaser from Bastrop, TX on 7/9/2008

Cons:
Difficult clean-up, Messy, Slow cure time

Bottom Line:

Comments about Mapei Mapei Planiseal Moisture Barrier (5 Gal):

It was a pain to plan around the long cure time, but definitely worth having a moisture barrier. Messy, and difficult to clean up, but adheres to concrete well, and the flooring glue adheres to it well. Less expensive than other comparable products.
