Comments about Morning Star 5/8" x 3-3/4" Strand Carbonized Bamboo:

We covered all the floors in our home with this bamboo. Once we got past the learning curve for the bamboo's hardness, we had no more trouble with this flooring than with installations of other hardwoods. Even laying the whole house as one continuous floor and laying it at an angle (cuts in every row!), we had no trouble finishing 800 sqft in a couple of days. Our one recommendation is to use nails, not staples, with the recommended gun. Testing a piece or two before beginning will help you dial in the right pressure.

We were looking for flooring that would hold up in a rental property and couldn't be more pleased with the results. It is a beautiful floor, and it is very hard. I tried to dent a sample piece and I couldn't. We've been debating on what flooring to put in our own home and we just may go with this again. [...]

Comments about Morning Star 5/8" x 3-3/4" Strand Carbonized Bamboo:

We had this installed a week ago by a pro in our entryway and hallway. It was exactly the color/finish we were looking for. Too soon to tell about the durability, but it's a beautiful floor. My only complaint is that some of the pieces had huge color variations, more than I expected based on the sample in the store, but overall it looks great. Hopefully it will stand up to the wear and tear of our 3 active boys.

This is very strong wood because of that the nails often did not penetrate the board. Beautiful and if you have any scratches when you are finished American Mahogany Polyurethane stain cleans them up.

Comments about Morning Star 5/8" x 3-3/4" Strand Carbonized Bamboo:

I looked around for a long time trying to find something that could with stand my 155 great pyrenees and my 95 pound german shepherd. My dogs run through the house, slide on the floor, and do what we call "floor swimming" (lying down on their side moving his legs like he is swimming). It's been over a month and I haven't found one scratch yet!! Because the dogs do slip I wouldn't recommend the floor if your dog is old or has bad hips unless you use lots of rugs.

We did install it ourselves. It was not difficult but it was very time consuming. It took 5 weekends to finish about 2000 sq. ft. The glue was a pain. We tried to clean as we went but it's almost impossible to get it all. I still need to go back and try to clean some of the glue that had hardened on the surface.

Other then that the floor looks beautiful and it was everything I had hoped for. I would buy it again!

I had carbonized bamboo installed in all rooms except 2 bedrooms and the bathrooms 2 years ago. This January I had it installed in the remaining bedrooms. With 2 kids, a dog and 2 cats, the flooring has held up beautifully throughout the house. It is easy to clean, very scratch resistant, and goes well with my existing cabinetry and furniture.

Comments about Morning Star 5/8" x 3-3/4" Strand Carbonized Bamboo:

I removed all carpet from the upstairs hall and all bedrooms then replaced with this flooring and it is quite lovely.
That said, the industry should invent an easier way to install this extremely hard/dense product. The wood is so hard that I had to hire professionals; they used the recommended nailer and 20 gauge cleats to install it and even they had a difficult time. The one day project became two long days and they had to change the saw blades often due to the density/hardness of the wood.
When I replace the carpeting on the first floor, I will not use this product.

Comments about Morning Star 5/8" x 3-3/4" Strand Carbonized Bamboo:

I've done four areas in my house with carbonized strand bamboo - love the look and color - I'm a pro at installing now - did a bedroom in a morning. The only challenge is that it is extremely hard. when you do the first runs you can't use the nailer. The first time I tried face nailing with pilot holes - forget it! Now I glue down two runs, let it harden overnight and start nailing the next day. I've put this all through our lower level - kitchen, dining area, family room, laundry room, pantry and bathroom were the first jobs. Did the master bedroom a year later, then extended partially into the master bath, which has tile around the tub and shower - looks awesome! finished with one more bedroom.
If you're doing contiguous spaces I would make sure to get all from one lot. Using this over 3 years, the color of each batch varies - I'd hate to have to mix. Even with one lot you want to pick from several boxes at a time - I used four. Great material, and much more dimensionally stable than hardwood due to the heavy resin contact used when making strand. Highly recommend it!

The floor is only down for a week now but we love it! It has beautiful coloring! Everyone who has seen it has also loved the floor. Even though the flooring is extremely dense and hard, it's easy to put down as long as you read the manufacterer's instructions. I looked all around and couldn't find the correct nailer so i bought my own, a powernailer 50p. I also used 1 1/2 cleats; some of the tongues split but they didn't affect the fastening or the abutting pieces. I scratched the floor with the nailer a couple of times but so far the flooring hasn't scratched from normal use. We can't wait to put the same flooring down in the living room and office.

Comments about Morning Star 5/8" x 3-3/4" Strand Carbonized Bamboo:

We purchased 850 ft^2 for our Foyer, Dining room & Living room. We found exactly what we wanted at LL in this product. When we went to purchase however, the lot with enough to finish our project was a much lighter color than all previous samples. It is beautiful and we love it but we did want the darker color. Just make sure you purchase all of it at once as it will never match if you do not. They told us that and now we absolutely believe it. We started with a 15.5 gage nailer from my brother and it split the tongue every time. The Powernail 18 gage nailer was excellent and had no issues. Overall, we will purchase another 1k ft^2 of it to do our upstairs in the near future. One install hint. Wear some cheap cloth gloves with the rubber coating while working. If you don't, you will have some painful splinters from the sides and bottom of the planks. No problem with that once installed.

We installed these floors in our master bedroom and guest room. I couldn't be happier. They turned out beautiful. I have three large dogs and so far so good...no scratches. The floors were installed over 2 months ago. I highly recommend these floors. We went with this type because it seems to be one of the strongest woods and with three dogs we needed something very durable. MAKE SURE THAT ALL THE MATERIALS ARE IN BEFORE YOU PAY...we had to wait over 8 weeks for the baseboards. Lumber Liquidators doesn't tell you when things are out of stock..you only find out when they start installing the floor after you pay for everything upfront. Tell them you want to make sure everything is in stock before you pay or it's delivered.

Comments about Morning Star 5/8" x 3-3/4" Strand Carbonized Bamboo:

This product was installed with a pneumatic stapler and pneumatic nailer with BAD results. Dimpling and Blistering along the seams where the staples and nails went were inevitable even after adjusting the pressure many times. The bottom line with this product is to hand nail or glue down to avoid this bistering affect! Best yet get the click and lock system and eliminate alot of ugly dimples and frustration and calls to their technicians whom by the way recommend gluing. Scroll down on Lumber Liquidator's website and click on installing floors tab and put the Morningstar brand in the search. You can bring up an entire pdf. file which fills the DIY the details. PS. This product which is milled from different sites can make the finish, color and quality vary tremendously!!!Get all you need from one mill lot and check at least 1 box for finish defects such as blemishes not naturally occuring in the bamboo, rough seams, and general finish on the product.

However, I wish I had not laid this product because it is very difficult to clean and if I do get it clean, It shows spots and smears easily. Comments about Morning Star 5/8" x 3-3/4" Strand Carbonized Bamboo:

You must use a cleat nailer to install this product, NOT a stapler. Don't even think about it. In addition, starting with a pneu finish nailer was not at all easy-some boards just would not take a nail in the tongue, though face nailing was a bit better.
I laid 2000SF of IPE decking last year, and this product is much harder. Also, I think its so hard the finish doesn't penetrate well. It scratches much more easily than the Bellawood quarter sawn white oak we've had in the kitchen for 8 years.
Do not use this in a high traffic area. I'm convinced you will be stripping it and refinishing it within 5 years, the finish is that thin and soft.
I think there are better choices for these reasons, however all 'civilians' that have seen it think it beautiful.

I was tired of trying to clean up my numerous cooking-related spills on the ancient carpeting in my kitchen and dining room, so I started looking into hardwood flooring. I liked the eco-friendly idea of bamboo, and the contractors just finished intalling this yesterday. I love it! It adds a richness and beauty to two previously "blah" rooms. What a difference!

The bamboo wood provides a great look. We made sure the bamboo acclimated for 4 days before installing. We opened the boxes and let the wood sit before installing. After 1.5 years in the first two room, we have no issues.

Comments about Morning Star 5/8" x 3-3/4" Strand Carbonized Bamboo:

We purchased this bamboo on June 23rd and started installing last weekend. The recommendation was 2 weeks acclimation, but wanted to give it a little extra time. Bought a moisture meter and 18 days was the sweet spot.

Tried the recommended Powernail 50p and rented a Bostich III stapler both 15g. Completely useless with this dense material. Every other nail/staple bent. Our professional installer couldn't believe how hard it was. He ended up buying a Bostitch EHF1838K with 18g staples and it couldn't be going smoother. No cracked tongues, almost every staple goes in perfect. Plus, if you try to pull up a board with nails/cleats compared to staples, you'll be convinced at the superior holding of staples.

Of 1200 sq feet, I think we have found about 5-6 bad boards, which is stellar in my opinion. The quality is there and once given a week or so, the "chemical" smell goes away. The compliments we have got from anyone that sees this is amazing. People can't get over how great this stuff looks.

I would highly recommend this and also the staple gun.

Comments about Morning Star 5/8" x 3-3/4" Strand Carbonized Bamboo:

We originally looked at a standard bamboo floor when we were building our new home, then we were turned onto the Strand bamboo. Though it cost substantially more, it was well worth the price. The floor looks great and we get loads of compliments. I did not install it and instead had two finish carpenters do the job. Their only complaints were that it was hard as rock so they had to pre-drill the outer boards to nail in and there was some (limited) splintering. The finish is not as hard as I had hoped (we do not have pets but do have young kids). Fabulon finish was recommended by one flooring person to resolve this but we chose to let the factory finish take its course.

Service & Delivery comments:

Truck shipping was timely and courteous. The pallet of flooring was well packed, and all boxes were in great shape.

I installed the floor a month ago and love everything about it. The color is awesome and there is enough variation to make it interesting. Installing it was no joke. 1000 feet wears on you. What i can tell you is that staples DO NOT work in this floor because it is too hard. After folding 12 staples we went to nails and never had a problem. The finish on the floor scrathes fairly easy but put felt pads under big furniture and dont run around in your golf spikes and the floor holds up well. I have 3 kids under 4, a dog, and a cat and so far there are no scrathes besides the scrathes that happend when moving furniture around. My wife and i love the floors and could not be happier.

Bottom Line:

Comments about Morning Star 5/8" x 3-3/4" Strand Carbonized Bamboo:

Bamboo all came from one lot but there was enough variation in color to allow for the finished floor to have "charactor". Have just put the furniture back in so do not know about scratching or durability yet.

Service & Delivery comments:

Lumber Liquidators was great to work with. Product came in when promised.
Our's was an on-slab application. We use Builders Unique of Albuquerque for the installation and are extremely glad we did. After removing the rug, we found that there was little if any level areas of the slab. It took a full day of grinding and 6 bags to get the slab lever. We live in an area with a high water table so had to put down the moisture barrier.

The actual laying of the floor (glue application) went very smoothly. The crew was professional and very detailed oriented (note finish on curved fireplaces). We are extremely happy with the finish floor.

After reviewing the readers' comments about installation, my husband and I were concerned that installing the carbonized strand bamboo would be a bit difficult. However, using a pneumatic floor nailer set at 110 PSI has made it very easy. We have never installed hardwood before, and it is a project that we enjoyed immensely. We initially planned to install the floor in our family room, but decided to incorporate our foyer as well. Make sure your boxes are all from the same dye lot number. The floor is truly beautiful, and we want to install it through the rest of the house. Great product!

Overall we like the look of the product. However, as others have said some lots have problems with the finish bubbling. In our case, we had to reject 25% of the boards due to bubbling of the finish. This resulted in us having to make another 60 mile trip to obtain more flooring. The surface also scratches easily. You can remove the finish using only your finger nail. The wood is durable but the finish seems substandard. I would recommend to others as long as they understand the finish durability and flaws.

The only down fall, and the guys at the store warned me, you really have to crank up the air pressure for the nailer, I ran about 102 psi, to ge tthe nails to set well.

Other than that, the product was great, the guys at the store very helpful. Would definitely return to Lumber Liquidators for my next project.

Service & Delivery comments:

I picked up the flooring from the local Lumber Liquidators location. Everyone was helpful and friendly and eager to help with loading my vehicle. I was able to look at each box prior to loading to make sure there were none damaged. I was able to reject those that I felt were not good with no complaints.

We had this installed in the living room, dining area, hall, and bedrooms in May 2009. I agonized over the decision as some people told me that bamboo was soft, would scratch easily, etc. WRONG! Not only is this the most beautiful flooring I've ever seen, this stuff is DURABLE. One year later and not a single scratch...2 dogs and 2 grandkids who visit plus plenty of other comings and goings haven't had any impact on the floor at all. It is as beautiful today as the day it was installed. I'd recommend it to anyone!

The material is very dense. A good 18 gauge cleat nailer is a must; the Powernail Flex worked awesome. This is because the nailer must be adjusted so the cleats hit the above the tongue just right. I had to raise the air pressure to about 115psi, due to the length of hose and the dense flooring material, so the nails would set. I had minimal cracking at the tongue. I used 1.5" Powernail cleats.

We put this floor in the Livingroom kitchen combination. It was definetly the hardest product my husband ever work with. Very durable but does scratch easily. Looks absolutely beautiful. This was our first time working with bamboo. The staff at L.L. was very helpful and did a great demo on the durability by virtually hitting this floor with everything possible, hammer other boards ect... I am not sure after reading these reviews how anyone could of used staples. This floor is so hard it bent the nails. We put this floor in a home that we are flipping. Now I would love to have it in our home. Because this wood is so durable & Hard not sure I can talk my husband into this one and not certain we can afford to pay someone. But, anyone that sees this flooring LOVES IT. I WANT IT!!!! The price is so affordable you would think you were getting the BEST of the Best. thanks Lumbar Liquidators
now my question is what is the best method & product for maintaining and cleaning this particular flooring?

I had carpenters install the flooring. The bamboo itself seemed to be fine, but many boards had "bubbling" on the finish. It was weird... but I kept getting calls from the carpenters about the "bubbling" of the finish... We were able to work around most because we used the good part of the boards for the short pieces. But, I would say that we had at least 10% waste because of the finish problems...

Looks absolutely beautiful. It has been installed in our home for about 2 weeks (about 1000 sq feet)- the more I see it the prettier it looks. I am especially enamored with the appearance on the staircase.
The different tones of the bamboo just "pop".
I have to broom a bit more than I did before- but sweeping more and knowing we have a cleaner home and that all that dirt isn't just sitting in the carpet is fine with me!

I just love this floor. I have it in my dinning room, Family Room, Hallway and one Bedroom. Guest comment on how nice the floor looks and they are usually surprised to find out it's bamboo. Bamboo is known to be soft and easy to damage but this one is very strong.

At first I wasnt excited when my husband purchased the Floor Cleaning Kit but once I used it I was glad he bought it. It's nice to see the floor polished. And I used all the furniture pads that came in the package. I want to protect my new floor.

I had to go and use liquid nails to install the flooring. the staples kept wadding up because it was to hard to use. the trim gun kept bending the nails where it was needed at the starting and finsihers of the flooring. This is a really hardwood floor and durable but just a pain in the butt to install. I would go with a oak prefinish or a raw and have it sanded and sealed for the same price!

As a contractor I have installed many floors. I intalled Morning Star Bamboo in every room of my home except the wet areas. We have 3 dogs. Accidents do happen but the clean up is real easy. All hardwood floors scratch so it's important to install felt pads on your furniture. Morning Star has less color variation than the Supreme but is more expensive. I have installed the Supreme when customers want more for there buck. They usually are not as happy with the product. I will be installing the Supreme in my cabin next spring. I love Bamboo and will not install anything else in my homes.

Comments about Morning Star 5/8" x 3-3/4" Strand Carbonized Bamboo:

Overall the floor is beautiful and I get positive comments all teh time. I had it profesinally installed, and I'm glad I did.

On the down side, the lots were not matched by Lumbar Liquidators staff- and I didn't know ther was a difference- so I have different shades. The installer did his best to organize them in the ebst way possible but still it should have been avoided if LL had been paying attention. They basically said -oops! Also, I bought treds for the stairs, although they are beautiful, they are obviously not the same shade as the floor.

The other issue I have is with the finish. I had several boards, at least two bundles that had blemishes in the finish. The finish also scratches very easily, not the underlying wood though.

I think if the LL stff was paying attention to detail, teh color issues would not have happened. They were very nice to work w though.

This has been an overall good product. My only complaint would be that some of the boards had bubbles in the finish that were there from the factory. About 5% of them. I would recommend gluing as a nailer will produce a small warping of the board at every nail site.

Comments about Morning Star 5/8" x 3-3/4" Strand Carbonized Bamboo:

I never installed floors before, so I had a friend who has help me get started then I finished the 1000 sq/ft job myself over the next week. It's hard work! Overall we're very happy with the flooring. Be careful when installing with floor nailer... it's not standard 3/4", so you'll need to get a different nailer "shoe" so the nail and planks are lined up and level. I damaged a few boards be being sloppy and not resting the gun on the groove.

We're not having a problem with scratches (even with two crazy cats), but we're careful to vacuum a few times a week. I did just drop a claw hammer on it and it dinged it... although, I'm not surprised by that.

Unbox all the boxes before hand since there are slight variation in color (which we love). You can then mix them up so you don't get a single are a lighter than another. They smell pretty bad when you unbox them but the smell fades over a week or two. The boxes are HEAVY! Unless you're getting just a few boxes, you'll need a truck to pick them up. Remember the transition pieces for doorways, moving to different surfaces (tile, linoleum, etc)!

That turned out to be DRAMA because the colors did not exactly match, after I got over the shock of that, the new color has grown on me! If there is a next time, I will do the job, all at once. The bottom line is both colors are GREAT!!!!!!

Comments about Morning Star 5/8" x 3-3/4" Strand Carbonized Bamboo:

I'm almost done with over 500 sq ft of self-installing this stuff and all that matters to me is that my wife loves it. The color of the boards can vary greatly (some are very blond, others are dark brown), and that is one of the things we love about it. We have a couple of three year olds who give this flooring a workout with their toys and, yes, there are scratches but I have to get down on my hands and knees to see them. Felt pads under furniture and going shoeless indoors will help limit scratches.

This was my first hardwood install, so I don't have anything to reference it against, but I thought overall it wasn't that difficult if you have a bit of DIY-ability. I rented a pneumatic floor stapler which misfired the staple about 10% of the time. As noted by others, this stuff is essentially battleship armor. Anyway, if you install this yourself I'd recommend having a rotary tool and pliers handy for those many times you will need to remove a wadded-up staple.

I've read many complaints about these boards splitting at the tongue. This is true, but I've not had any issues so far with the finished product. This stuff is top notch, Grade A, two thumbs up material and I'd recommend it to anybody.

All in all, I'm positive we've increased the value of our home by more than the cost of the materials. Thanks, Lumber Liquidators!

IMPORTANT NOTE: as others have suggested, make sure you mix and match as many boxes as you can. We began with a lighter colored living room (mixing 5 boxes at a time), and then ran into several boxes in a row that were quite dark. So we used as much of the dark as possible in one room, and were then able to mix and match again to the medium color as seen in the photos. Watch for splinters! They sting.

The bamboo is beautiful. It is very, very heavy, too. We laid around 2600 sq. ft. in about a week on a concrete floor downstairs, and a wood subfloor upstairs. I had never laid flooring and was specially nervous about starting right. So i hired a pro to help. Spreading the glue for an amateur can be a nightmare... it gets on everything! The pro spread the glue, another helper cut, and i installed after some helpful instruction. It was pretty straightforward.

I'd suggest using the softer, rubber knee pads as the harder plastic scratches the floor.

The planks went together relatively easy, but we did have some glue seep up between the seams. It was easily removed with paint thinner, or, after drying, with a knife.

I wonder if this floor can be refinished or if it will just splinter?

These bamboo floors are wonderful! I had my experienced contractor put it in. He loved it too. He was amazed that there were no "bad" boards that were warped or unusable. We have about 1200 sq ft and went through our kitchen, breakfast, hallways, master bath, etc. We put it everywhere. This floor has a durable, hard finish. We rolled our 26 cu ft fridge around on it...no problem. Comes in 3 ft long boards. This is a bit more variable in color tones between boards than I expected but looks fabulous! I'm an engineer and very picky but this stuff looks great and our contractor was incredibly skilled at installation. I think I've "sold" a few others on installing this floor already and our installation project just ended today. I can't say enough good things about this floor. Don't hesitate. One option--buy one box, lay it out and look at it.

This was our first time installing a hardwood floor. I bought 11 boxes and only 1 piece had a chipped end. We chose to glue down the wood because we were installing it on a concrete foundation. The boards were easy to cut and didn't chip. We only scratched one piece throughout the installation, but that was caused sliding the board puller across a corner piece. Overall the wood seems to be durable, but only time will tell. We like this floor a lot and will be installing it in the rest of our house.

the pictures dont show all of its beauty...this is a truly unique and beautiful product!

We built a new house and had our contractor install this floor. He was worried about using bamboo as the regular bamboo is soft. After he saw it he was surpised at how beautiful it was. They bent a few nails because it is so strong. We have 2 large breed dogs and they do put a few scratches in it (which is to be expected) but they are hardly noticible. We also installed the stair treads and floor vents. I will say the floor vents have faded quite a bit but they still look nicer than white vents would have. I must say I love the floor. I get lots of compliments!

This was my first time installing any type of wood floor, so I was a bit apprehensive. But I bought a PowerNailer #50P and used 18ga, 1-1/4" cleats (don't forget practice nailing on a board first!). Based on all I read about its superior hardness, I predrilled for all face nailing, using #4 finish nails. The predrilling takes more time, but it was worth it. I just finished a small 100SF room, and plan on installing at least another 900SF in bedrooms. Love the durability, color and board consistency (both height & width) as well as the "green" factor. I can't say enough good things about this product.

Had our contractor install the strand floors in all rooms but bathrooms and kitchens of our 100 year-old rowhouse.

The floors look great, the wood is very tough, so a high-psi professional nail gun is recommended!

They've been in a few weeks now, hope they look this good in a year.

The boards are very uniform in color and grain. There isn't one that your eye doesn't go to and wish you hadn't used. It looks like regular hardwood but it is a green product. The material/color is all the way through the board not a laminate on top. All boards come in the same size so installation goes fast. No looking for the next size to use. Highly recommend!

It was a lot of work but so worth it. I love the way it turned out. I installed just under 1000 square feet in just over 2 weeks with almost no help.
This is a very hard product so I bent a lot on the nails where I had to blind nail. I found that the darker the board the harder it was so I tried not to use any of the darker boards where I had to blind or face nail. The pneumatic floor nailer worked great with this product.
There are some color variations from light to dark. I worked from many boxes at a time to assure an nice random look and it looks great. There is very little waste mostly the random finish bubble or split tongue.Even with those I was usually able to use a most or at least a portion of the board. I did have to stagger the boards to create a random look since the boards are all uniform length. This accounted for the bulk of the waste but with planning I was able to use the cut ends on the other side of the room most of the time. I had quite a bit left over and only figured about 5% for waste to begin with. I hvae installed oak in a previous home and had considerably more waste and quite a few unusable boards. Thats not a problem with this product.
When I unpacked the bamboo to let it acclimate there was a very strong oder like burnt caramel that lasted several days but it does go away eventually. If you are sensitive you should be aware of this. The first night it prompted us to go out for dinner.
I don't think there is a better product on the market for this price range and with 12 months same as cash I couldn't pass it up.
The end result is beautiful and worth all the hard work and bent nails.

Very attractive product that seems very durable. We had carpet and Pergo on the first floor and replaced everything with Bamboo. The bamboo is quite compared to the Pergo and the finish is beautiful. Used a bosch floor stapler shimmed out and a 15 guage finish nailer with 2 1/2 inch finish nails for face nailing. Anything smaller than the 15 guage just bent on impact. The wood is extremely dense and does not scratch or dent easily. Next project is ripping off the toungue and using it as a toe kick under the cabinets in the kitchen. I have placed a few pieces under to get an idea on how it looks and it looks great.

This floor is extremely beautiful and the guys at Lumber Liquidators were very helpful. The bamboo is actually harder than oak and at times made the installation tricky. I purchased a Ramsond floor nailer from [...] for [$] delivered and it served me well with the 900 sq.ft of flooring I had to install. I put the flooring in our master bedroom, hallway, living room and dining room over the course of about 1 1/2 weeks - working around my job and family commitments. If I had been able to do it full time, it probably would have taken me 3 - 4 days with moving furniture, lifting carpet etc. We love the look and feel and with two teenage boys and a Golden Retriever we haven't seen any scratches or dents - yet.My only advice would be to ensure that whatever nailer/stapler you purchase, make sure you test a few settings out on a piece or two to make sure that you have the proper settings. I used about 95 psi delivered and that seemed to work fine for me, but you may find you need more or less - play with it before starting.

At first I felt sorry for my husband since he has never installed flooring before. But after we got the right tools and figured it out the process went smoothly. These floors were probably more difficult to put in than other hardwoods (since they are dense and harder than oak...hence scratch resistant), but we would do it all over again. We have it in our dining room and foyer and they look awesome! We also have 3 dogs and a cat, and we have no scratches to speak of. We plan on putting these in our office and family room also.

Flooring looks fantastic we have recieved many compliments. The begining was quite frustrating we almost gave up I'm so glad we didn't. At first the nails were bending no matter what we did we couldn't get them to go in. finally we used an 18 gauge with 1 1/2 inch nails. it's all about finesse, we found that the gun had to be held at just the right angle on the tongue otherwise it would either split the bamboo or bend. once we found the proper angle it went super smooth and easy. well worth the effort. The only con we found was that the reducer we needed for the transition between floors did not match despite the fact that they(LL) repeatedly tried to get us the proper coloring it was always very light. This is a beautiful product. It is very, very hard. A good thing, except when you are trying to use a brad nailer (16ga) for face nails or on the tongue (as discussed in other reviews). Most boards reject brad nails (even at high PSI settings). One then has to resort to pre-drilling and hand nailing for any place the pneumatic floor nailer would not fit. One concept I figured out is that not all boards are the same hardness. The lighter colored and more 'stripey' boards would accept a face nail.
It is very straight, so you do not have to deal with warped boards. 10% unusable is a good estimate. This is mainly due to bubbles in the finish, only a couple boards were improperly milled.
I used the Powernail 50P pneumatic floornailer. It worked like a champ.
Some of the other reviews were very helpful and candid.

Comments about Morning Star 5/8" x 3-3/4" Strand Carbonized Bamboo:

I used this Morning Star Bamboo Strand carbonized wood flooring to replace carpeting... I wish I had done this a long time ago but one thing led to another and time really flies when your always working on something around the house... The flooring is a great alternative to the traditional "hardwood" floorings... I would recommend it to anyone who wants to renew the look of their house and keep in with the "new" GREEN thing that is the IN thing today.I do want to make note that there ARE a few problems that should be noted.... When you order the flooring try to consider some of the Extra's that you might need.... SPLINES for reversing the flooring are one serious consideration. I will admit that when I was ordering the flooring ( and you do have to ORDER it since they do not Stock it in any of the stores) the salesman did say " do you need any splines, thresholds, transitions or 1/4 round moldings?" I mentioned that I would get these things after the installer saw the wood and planned out the installation as I personally did not know what would be needed. It would have been good to know at THAT TIME that none of these products are Stocked in the store and would ahve to be ordered and there is a Lead time in any order. When it came time to do the actual install I went back to the store to get some transition pieces and splines and it was then that I found out that they were only available "on Order". Using Standard purchase Splines from another store proved to be a real pain. Seems these Bamboo flooring products use a special spline that is thinner and narrower than what you would buy at your local [...]. We spent considerable amounts of time with a belt sander shaving down these splines to fit the bamboo flooring.A second thing and this is probably more of an attribute than a Fault... This is ONE TOUGH FLOOR to install. It is as hard as a brick... as the saying goes. My flooring installer said that he had not seen anything this hard since he once installed a product called Brazilian Rainbow Wood. This flooring was installed with a neumatic hapmmer and floor staples. 120 Pounds of air pressure behind every swing of the hammer and in some places those staples just refused to go through the wood. And when it came to edge-nailing the last board you had better pre-drill those nail holes because they don't make a Finishing nail that will penetrate this wood. Even an 18 Guage nailer didn't penetrate this wood... And as a side note I burned out 3 or 4 Drill bits just drilling the holes.Probably my Biggest Disapointment was in the color of ONE box. Although ALL the boxes ordered came with the same lot number ( 080956 ) there was one box that did look as if it was picked up from a different order. We were installing from three boxes as recommended by the manufacturer and things were going nicely... at some point I went out for "Coffee for the Guys" and they pulled several boards from one box not noticing that the wood in this box was darker. It probably would have been better if this box were scattered around the floor but it all ended up in one small area... By the time I got back it was too late to remove this part of the floor and reinstall it in more a random pattern. Fortunately for me this section of flooring ends up under a dining room table and unless your looking for it you don't notice it right off. In retrospect this is great flooring and I am sure that it will outlast ME. I have at least one more room that I will be getting done soon eliminating the last of the Carpeted rooms in the house... The alergies just love this hardwood. Pay the extra... Buy the best... You'll love it but remember the warnings and keep an eye out for that Dark Box in your order.

We installed it in the living room and kitchen. It came out beautiful and we are very happy with the look. It cleans up like a dream. Installation was a bit hairy at first. Setting the psi on the staple gun so it would not splinter the wood was time consuming. We found 70psi to be a good level. Just make sure that the staple gun is level on the flooing and in line with the tounge or edges will chip. But once we got our rythmn down we were off to the races. I highly recommend you have a good saw to make your cuts and nails long enough to nail down the first two to three rows. We had to predrill for those but works like a charm. Would buy again if we did another home. When researching this product, another buyer reported that the flooring gave off a noxious odor, we let it acclimate to the rooms for 1 week (stacked and out of the boxes with plenty of room inbetween) and only found a slight odor upon opening, have not had any smell from this floor other than a new wood smell which only lasted about week after installation (due to the cuts we made i'm sure).

Comments about Morning Star 5/8" x 3-3/4" Strand Carbonized Bamboo:

We love, love, love our new floors. We looked at a lot of different products before deciding on this one. It was by far the most scratch resistant of any natural product we tested. The color is beautiful and the color and the grain are consistent throughout the floor. While we are a little concerned about the fading issue that is inherent in any bamboo product, we are taking precautions to minimize this drawback. It feels great to tell people about our sustainable choice in flooring.

Warm Elegance
By SJCnLAVerified Purchaser from Los Angeles, Baldwin Hills, California on 5/3/2008
Pros:
Adds warm depth, Attractive Finish, Durable, Scratch Resistant
Cons:
Confusing installation, Difficult To Install
Best Uses:
Bedroom, Family Room
Bottom Line:

Comments about Morning Star 5/8" x 3-3/4" Strand Carbonized Bamboo:

Our family room, hallway and master bedroom were revamped with Carbonized Bamboo plank flooring. The warmth and depth of the color is elegant and very pleasing to see.

Our installers had difficulty using the pneumatic nail gun and their nails kept jamming inside the gun or would twist and buckle when they tried to shoot the nails through the lip on the bamboo. Finally, we got the heavy duty adhesive and the job was completed in two days.

Comments about Morning Star 5/8" x 3-3/4" Strand Carbonized Bamboo:

I just did an entire house in the moring star stranded carbonized bamboo and it looks amazing! I have installed all types of wood and laminate for a while and this was probably the most difficult to install. Make sure your gun is set for 3/4" NOT 1/2". You cannot face nail this product with a brad nailer so get out your drills and finish nails and get ready to do it by hand, and dont forget to bring your patience!

Had to replace all the flooring in my house, except for bedrooms this winter. We chose this bamboo for its finish, color variation and durability. To date it has held up wonderfully and is much easier to clean than the laminate I had before. I have moved furniture around (with protectors) and dropped things on the kitchen floor and it still looks great!! The only thing was it was very time consuming nailing it in place, but well worth it.

Comments about Morning Star 5/8" x 3-3/4" Strand Carbonized Bamboo:

We have two Greyhounds who have to build a nest of blankets. We were afraid the finish would scratch. This has not been the case. Finish is excellent. Beautiful shine. Easy to maintain. Only problem we do have, well actually the Greyhounds have, is that the blankets go flying all across the floor. Fantastic product. And, we like the fact that it is sustainable, which makes it good for the environment.
Only problem with install was that the wood is so hard, we had to use strong staples! But, that is still a good thing.

A great product at an even better price. It is harder to install than real hardwoods like oak and cherry due to the smaller lengths and rigidity. All joints must be perfect or gaps will appear between the boards and you cannot fix them like with other hardwoods. But with careful measuring and planning the job turns out excellent. Also had almost no waste from damaged boards. Well worth the investment.

sturdy product but color/finish varies

Comments about Morning Star 5/8" x 3-3/4" Strand Carbonized Bamboo:

I put this product through my house. The finish varied from glossy to matte. The color varied from light to dark. Most boxes had the same date on them (some a few months earlier). I used the earlier (and lighter) boxes in bedrooms, but have a large Living area, and the variation in finishes caused me to have to open all boxes and mix them up. In my application, it wasn't too bad, but there should be a warning that you have to mix the boxes as you go. The durability is wonderful, though!

This product transformed our home. We went from old beat up carpet to a beautiful hardwood floor that is environment-friendly. Pictures do not do this floor justice. Go get the sample and you will see how durable and the beautiful finish of this floor.

The only reason that I did not give it a perfect rating is that we have not had the floor in that long.

Comments about Morning Star 5/8" x 3-3/4" Strand Carbonized Bamboo:

Looks great, for sure. Darn near indestructable as well-- I dropped a hammer on it, and not even a scratch or a dent. Its incredibly dense-- in fact, so dense that its nearly impossible to surface nail!!! And who has time or inclination to predrill holes in flooring?!?!?
We used a regular finish nailer for all our other floors, but after MUCH testing and trial and error, switched to a brad nailer at 140psi. A little extreme...

But it LOOKS great, and the regular flooring nailer (PortaNailer) worked great, once we got that dialed in for depth and air pressure.
