This is a beautiful wood!
By Stephanie, the non-installerVerified Reviewer from Wheaton, IL on 11/10/2008

Cons:

Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

We did not install this product ourselves, and our installers commented that this wood was very hard. Apparently it bent their staples on first try. Because of the hand scraping, it has a very soft look to it,with naturally rough grooves, knots and color variation. We had it installed in two large areas and the stairs. Because of the extensive variation and knots in the floor, you have to look hard for the areas with wood filler. There was very little wasted product. We love it!

We love our new floor! We have dogs and wanted a flooring that would be attractive but withstand a few inadvertent scratches. We tested samples out by scratching them and decided on this flooring. The real thing is so much more beautiful and has more variation in wood tones than we could have hoped for. We have had very little waste. We are more than pleased with our choice and know that we will enjoy it for years to come!

My husband and I installed this floor ourselves - the only negative was the time it took us to complete the project (6 days of almost constant work, including time for removal of old carpet and leveling the floor). We also started with a manual floor nailer but quickly learned that the hardness of the wood makes hitting the nailer hard enough to force the nail through the wood almost impossible. With a pneumatic nailer, the job went much faster! The floor is beautiful and has a very interesting, varigated and rustic finish. There were very few unusable pieces overall so it was a good value also.

Looks Beautiful..Millwork not that good

Pros:
Attractive Finish
Cons:
Difficult To Install
Best Uses:
Office
Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Beautiful looking wood and interesting surface and finished look...real rustic and forgiving with animals in the house..
Millwork is somewhat inconsistent....width variations requiring some layout problems..end milling not square or straight...some boards narrower on one end than the other (unusable).
Could not use flooring nailer on some boards due to width variation...brad nailer would hide in the open joint...Overall it require installation time of 25% more than a consistent product.

We used the flooring in our office, dining, bonus and great rooms. Overall pleased with the flooring -- it looks great. There were a lot of pieces that had sawdust filler in them. With no closets to hide them in, we ended up with a lot of culls. Our flooring cleat nailer did a nice job, but we had to pre-drill areas before face nailing. It took a bit of time to sort the flooring since there was up to 1/16" variation in widths. Wish quality control was a little better, but would still use this product again.

This flooring was as good as advertised. I have not had much experience with installing solid hardwood, but with the help of some various resources and some hints from the guys at LL, it was a breeze. I as pleasantly surprised to have much less than 10% waste. One con was that there are a lot of boards in each package that are of 2 or 3 lengths. I would like to have seen some more long and short pieces to help the variation of the patterns. With that said, it was still a huge success.

Perfect flooring for a cottage look!
By Cottage DIYersVerified Reviewer from Washington on 8/11/2008

Best Uses:

Describe Yourself:

Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The tobacco-stained teak flooring we purchased is perfect for the vacation cottage we are in the process of building. The satin, hand-scraped finish feels good against your feet and gives the floor a vintage look that marries well with tongue and groove ceilings. The teak hardwood is brutally dense and amazingly difficult to scratch, and we expect that the dark stain and distressing of the wood will hide any wear and scratches to the floor that do occur. As a side note, we were pleasantly surprised to find few culls in our order.

The grain color variations and the beautiful hand-scraped finish fits perfectly in our casual but sophisticated decor. We love our Tobacco Road flooring. Makes us wonder why it got this name. Lumber Liquidators is just wonderful, we could not believe the prices and quality of the products. [...] The VA Mills Tabacco Road Teak is just beautiful- the hand scraped peices are perfect as you don't see any scratches(we have a dog)- also, the wood is 3/4 inch think with the grain running all the way through. So in years from now if we need to refinish we could. The colors are perfect and offer a variety of brown's and Taupe variations. We could not be happier with our purchase and have had so many complements. Thank You Lumber Liquidators!! Scott and Tammie

We have completed the Living Room and are now going to replace the wood in the hallway and entryway with the same because it looks so much better and is so much more durable.
Because of the hardness and the thickness of the wood all nail holes need to be predrilled and saws need to be extremely sharp.

This is the perfect floor if you have a large dog. We did go through boxes of wood and took out pieces that were not as nice to use in closet and under appliances in kitchen. As the floor is already distressed, you don't have to worry about dog's toenail marks. It is also great as it hides dirt and dog hair!! We have had lots of compliments. You won't regret putting in this floor.

I was extremely pleased with the fact that every board I pulled out of the box was perfectly useable. I had expected that I would have to pull the occasional board to set is aside for emergency use only. However, I was able to install every board, and without sorting for any reason other than to jog the joints with the various lengths provided. I plan to use this product again on other projects as we move through and update different sections of the house.

I love my new floor. Everyone who sees it comments on how beautiful it is. One thing I really like about the floor is that it is somewhat distressed and so when my 5 year old drops things on it or a chair is pulled across the floor I don't cringe, because it just blends in and adds a little more character.

I've installed several wood floors and this one is the best one ever. While there have been a few boards with blemishes, overall the quality is excellent. Also, this is the only floor I've ever installed where the wood was not warped to a degree. All the oak floors I've installed have required me to push, pull, and pry the pieces together. Not so with this Teak. And the look is outstanding. Very original. While only time will tell as to the durability, ease of cleaning and scratch resistance, I have high hopes.

My new wood floor

Cons:

Best Uses:

You really need to make molding to match the selected wood. I was not told that the moldings are used for several wood grain/patterns that are close. In my case the top stair molding wasn't close to matching the teak wood.

Durable, but great variation
By B GVerified Reviewer from Charles Town, WV on 3/20/2008
Pros:
Durable, Scratch Resistant
Cons:
Too many knots and splits
Best Uses:
Bedroom, Dining Room
Describe Yourself:
Handyman
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The teak has a capacity to make a beautiful and durable floor, but there is a wide variation in color and consistency of the wood. However, if you are willing to take a little extra time to lay it out, it blends well.

There were some wide gaps in joining the flooring which also takes some effort and concentration to keep them at tolerable limits.

My greatest disappointment was several pieces had splits, cracks and knot holes that had been filled which detract from the beauty of the floor. I was able to place most of those in closets. This kept me from coming up short or having to decide to place them in an area where I would prefer not to. There could be a little more done on quality control in this area. This is why I would not give it 5 stars.

Overall, I am very happy with the product. The variations tend to disappear in the bigger picture of the whole floor. I wanted a rustic look and the Tobacco Road Teak gave me that. The teak is also very hard and durable which should wear very well.

This flooring is fantastic! Easy to install. We have two LARGE dogs and chose this product because of the distressed, hand scraped finish. It hides scratches very well. Also, we were looking for flooring without alot of high shine - just our preference - and this fit the bill. The color is rich and warm. We put the floor throughout the living/dining room area and carried it directly through to the kitchen. Of added bonus, the hand scraped texture feels wonderful on bare feet. I think it feels like a mini foot massage, my partner likens it to the beach's rippled sand.
