Return Policy Ruins Overall Experience
By TVerified Purchaser from San Antonio, TX on 9/13/2009
Pros:
Good Millwork
Cons:
None
Best Uses:
Bedroom, Dining Room, Family Room, Living Room, Office
Describe Yourself:
Avid Do-It-Yourselfer

Comments about R.L. Colston 3/4" x 2 1/4" Red Oak Flooring:

There were only very slight millwork issues but overall very good and I would recommend based on the product BUT only order what you need (see service comments).

Service & Delivery comments:

A restocking fee of 20% is ridiculous. I ordered 675sqft, which included the Lumber Liquidators recommended waste %, used all but 60 sqft. and then returned the 4 bundles within their return policy limits. This material was unfinished red oak still strapped in perfect condition bundles. When I went to return it I was charged a 20% restocking fee. This was not a special order product. They just put it back on the shelf. I'm sorry but after spending close to $2,000 this ruins an otherwise good experience.

Comments about R.L. Colston 3/4" x 2 1/4" Red Oak Flooring:

The floor is beautiful, relatively easy to install. I installed on a concrete floor. I ended up pre-drilling the holes and used the yellow #4 load with concrete nails. Worked great, but I went through a few concrete drill bits. There were a lot more knots and worm holes than what the picture shows, but they add character. A lot more sanding than I thought also. I used a hand held belt sander for the ruff spots and rented an orbital floor sander from Depot to finish.

So why one star you ask. It wasn't the lumber or the work – 5 stars for that. It was Lumber Liquidators. When you purchase your hardwood, take a calculator and a tape measure when you pick it up. They calculate square footage different than I do. The hardwood comes in bundles that they say contain 19.69 square feet. My math says it is more like 15.75 square feet per bundle. The bundles are 7' long, three boards wide and four high. Each board at 2-1/4 in wide, well you do the math… I was doing a single room at 140 square feet, so the difference wasn't a lot of money, but it still (inappropriate word) me off.

Comments about R.L. Colston 3/4" x 2 1/4" Red Oak Flooring:

Product is excellent, purchased a lot of 600 sq. ft. for dining, family and living rooms. Only about 2 or 3 boards from the entire lot were unusable. Took stain and finish very nicely. Easy for a first-time installer as long as you take your time and read information online before install.

Service & Delivery comments:

Originally, was given the incorrect product (#2 instead of select). New order was promptly placed and delivered to my door within a reasonable amount of time. The only thing I would say is that LL didn't believe me that they had screwed up, but as soon as I brought in a few boards from the lot I received, they had a new order out to me immediately.

Comments about R.L. Colston 3/4" x 2 1/4" Red Oak Flooring:

My husband and I installed this in our study. I calculated the need based on measurements plus 10% overage and we came out with just enough! I hate waste, so that thrilled us both. I was going to do the finish sanding, staining and polyurethane but my asthma would not allow. I asked at Lumber Liquidators for contractor names and I was given a reference to someone who did the work right, on-time and just did a great job. This wood is packaged with the right mix of long and short peices (be sure to stagger joints). We married it with an existing floor that was professionally installed and finished 8 years ago - it looks GREAT.

Comments about R.L. Colston 3/4" x 2 1/4" Red Oak Flooring:

We had a small dining room with old flooring that didn't match the existing hardwoods in our home. The select red oak was nearly a perfect match. The only way we could have matched it better was to find reclaimed red oak from the 1960's. We are very happy with the final product. Of the 6 bundles that we brought home, there were only 3 small boards that were either cracked or warped the rest were perfect.

Comments about R.L. Colston 3/4" x 2 1/4" Red Oak Flooring:

This is a lot of work to install, then sand, then finish but it is my opinion it gives the best looking floor possible. No laminate can compare and although the pre-finished solid wood floors have the "feel" of this the smooth, no beveled edge board floor looks far superior. Cost is more competitive than top quality pre-finished floors if you install it yourself too.

Comments about R.L. Colston 3/4" x 2 1/4" Red Oak Flooring:

I've installed several floors, both prefinished and unfinished. I prefer the seamless quality of an unfinished installation. The flooring I purchased was so well engineered that it required a minimal amount of sanding to achieve a beautiful final product. You do have additional equipment rental costs for finishing, but I live in an older home so it's worth it to me to get a vintage looking floor.

Comments about R.L. Colston 3/4" x 2 1/4" Red Oak Flooring:

I saved a lot by doing most of the work myself. I paid professionals to nail down the boards and I tore out and disposed of the old flooring, sanded and finished with semi-gloss Varathane Diamond Gloss , and installed the trim. Some boards thinned a little about an inch or so from the end and needed attention with a hand sander to smooth them out enough for finishing. The floors are really beautiful. My wife says I'm "old school", but to me, a sanded and finished wood floor is superior to all others.
