Besides Red Oak, White Oak is another extremely popular flooring choice in American homes.
The heartwood is a light brown color and some boards have a pinkish tint or a slight grayish cast.  The sapwood is white to cream.
White Oak's grain is open, with longer rays than Red Oak and occasional swirls and burls.

What is "Rustic Grade"?
Rustic Grade has larger tight knots and the most color variation. Also referred to as #2 or Third grade. It is the perfect choice when character marks and contrasting appearance is desired.

Please note unfinished flooring sold in open, strapped bundles and not sold in boxes.

Uneven milling - needs wood filler

By ml

About Me Avid Do-It-Yourselfer

Pros

  • Attractive Design
  • Interest Rustic

Cons

  • Uneven Milling

Best Uses

  • Bedroom
  • Living Room

Comments about 3/4" x 5" White Oak:

While the wood is very pretty and I was prepared for/wanted the knots for a more rustic wood, the wood is not milled evenly so the boards do not rest snugly together requiring the use of wood filler. Once finished it's not noticeable but it should be clarified and the dealer did not mention this.

    Comments about 3/4" x 5" White Oak:

it turned out well though even with the overage of sq. footage, still came close to not having enough due to damaged and unusable boards

BELLAWOOD 3/4" x 4" American Walnut ) The formula for the Bellawood finish is a custom mix that has a 50/50 gloss. The sheen you get is shinier than satin, but not as shiny as semi -gloss.

    • Q:

I plan on installing American Walnut on my lower house level on a concrete slab. I plan on using a vapor barrier on the concrete floor then nailing stringers and inserting my insulation and sub floor heating in between the stringers. Then over the stringers I will be nailing plywood and then the flooring. Will the American Walnut be adequately protected and if I heat the floor gradually to reduce stress on the floor will it reduce warpage and cracks?

    • Q:

I'm interested in matching our "character grade" American walnut that includes knotholes and other imperfections. Does "natural grade" include a fair amount of such imperfections?
      Asked on 5/28/2012 by Anonymous

      1 answer

      • Staff Reviewer

        A:

Yes our natural grade would have such characteristics and the rustic grade would have even more

    • Q:

Can you install this over an existing oak hardwood floor with the grain going in the same direction? Do you need a vapor barrier between the old and the new? Best to glue or staple/cleat?
Asked on 1/20/2012 by Anonymous from LaGrange, IL

      1 answer

      • Staff Reviewer

        A:

You will need to install the new floor perpendicular to the old or install a layer of 1/2" CDX plywood first.
I would put down a layer of 15 lb roofing felt.
I would use an 18 gauge cleat for this application.
        Thank you for your inquiry.

    • Q:

This is my choice based on look and color, but not for hardness rating on scale, what would be the closest match to this look in hardwood but with a higher rating? Brazilian Walnut?
      Asked on 8/23/2011 by Anonymous

      1 answer

      • Staff Reviewer

        A:

Yes I think this is the closest color match to American Walnut. Note* that Brazilian Walnut starts out quite vaigated in color but darkens (patina) over time to a rich medium to dark brown.
