White Oak Butcher Block Counters

By Johnny A

from San Francisco

Verified Reviewer

Pros

  • 12 Foot Lenth No Seams
  • Good Availablity
  • Good For The Price

Cons

  • Not the best workmanship

Best Uses

  • Family Kitchen

For the price this will suit our busy well used kitchen perfectly. The workmanship is not the best. Two 25" wide counter tops and one was slightly wider making the 45 degree joint harder to make. A lot of putty patching on the working surface and some poor surfacing on one of the counter tops. Don't expect a flawless high quality butcher block, but our purposes this works out great.

Quality is meh, price is right

By wasco

Pros

  • Affordable

Cons

  • Gaps
  • Too much filler
  • Voids

Best Uses

Like other reviewers have noted, this is not the highest quality butcher block product. The sample piece in the store showed no gaps and minimal filler, but the delivered product had a sizable end gap on nearly every join, a flaw that really shows up once the block is cut, installed and oiled. There were also some flawed edges, like the saw operator pulled the piece before the cut was finished. One slat had an internal void that may render a 2-foot section of block useless, as it is spongy and will break through pretty quickly I'm sure.

I don't really understand why there are such noticeable end gaps. It's like the manufacturer was trying to get an extra 1/16" out of every slat and making up the rest with the filler. But you get what you pay for.

I would have returned this product but it would have greatly delayed my project to find another source, so I went with it. And the price is low.

I bought the 12' White Oak Butcher Block Countertop. Lumber Liquidator's price is the lowest of all I have seen by more than half and the product is beautiful!

      Service and delivery comments:

We had to initiate all communication of shipping info: expected arrival date, when to pick up, etc. but L.L was always quick to respond. There was also some confusion at pick up but L.L. made it right. Since L.L. worked to make it all right, it was an overall good ecperience.

LOVE these. however, CHECK before bringing home. we picked up in store 2 12' pieces and 1 (we found after installing) was almost 1/2" narrower than the other. we'll make it work with a back splash but annoying none the less.

I bought these for my kitchen countertops. I stained them twice with minwax golden oak color and then sealed them according to instructions with waterlox sealer/finisher. Time will tell on how they hold up but for now i could NOT be happier!

Product arrived at the store in about 2 weeks. Lots of filler used on poorly matched joints, no straight edge or square end - takes a good bit of work and love to turn this into a decent looking finished product, but the price reflects the quality.

Used for kitchen countertops and had to wait for 12 footers almost 2 months. Had to cut wood down to my needed sizes but that exposed the fingerjoints that were not assembled tight. The fingerjoints that were exposed on viewed side were packed with wood filler. Planed thickness was not uniform in the wood strips and you can see it from front edge of countertop. Guess the old saying holds true....you get what you pay for. This product would be best suited for utility counters where quality appearance is not paramount.

Two sections can be joined together.

                              1) For a good glue edge bond; using a straight edge guide and saw recut 1/2"or so off one side of each.

                              2) For center support and strength; Use a biscuit jointer or doweling jig, then wood glue the edges and bar-clamp until dry, re-sand. Add a beam to the counter to help support the seam joint.
