About Brazilian Cherry:
Brazilian Cherry is one of our most popular woods and well known for its rich color, hardness, and durability.
It may show a myriad of hues from golden brown to reddish brown.
It is an excellent choice for both residential and commercial use. Its durability makes it perfect for high-traffic areas that call for a striking appearance.
As the color deepens with age, it becomes even more stunning and is the perfect choice for any room or space.

Brazilian Cherry is not recommended for radiant heating systems.
As the floor ages, white mineral deposits may occur.
Unfinished flooring sold in open, strapped bundles and not sold in boxes.

Comments about R.L. Colston 3/4" x 5" Brazilian Cherry:

The wood is beautiful. However, when the label on each bundle states 5" wide, I expect every plank to be 5" wide. I ordered 23 bundles of flooring, I had widths of 4 3/4, 4/13/16, 4 7/8 and 4 15/16! Different widths within the same bundle. I checked all my labels and they were all milled on the same day in the same lot, so why all the diffferences? It made the installation process much longer as I has to measure each board as I took it out of the bundle and make stacks of different widths to use when making a run of flooring. WE got it done but it was dissappointing that we had so many widths to deal with.

      Comments about R.L. Colston 3/4" x 5" Brazilian Cherry:

I installed about 200 sq. ft. of 5" unfinished brazilian cherry. I noticed many of the pieces were not milled the same so I had some gaps.
I ended up purchasing some more expensive brazilian cherry and every piece was milled correctly. No gaps on the more expensive flooring. You get what you pay for.

        Comments about R.L. Colston 3/4" x 5" Brazilian Cherry:

I installed this wood in 2 rooms with a very skilled carpenter. It's a beautiful wood that offers a great deal of flexibility. It can be dressed up to look very pristine or classy, or you can create a rustic look.

It went down incredibly well given the size of the project - hardly any challenges. It will add room/house value above and beyond the name, "brazillian cherry." Visually, it takes the look of a room to another level.

        Comments about R.L. Colston 3/4" x 5" Brazilian Cherry:

I have used this species of flooring before, but never in the quality of yours. The wood was virtuously knot and blemish free. The best milling of tongue and grooving I've ever seen. Each board was precision cut to width. As a result, it intalled perfectly, which will only require a light sanding at most. As a result, the customer had us do every room in the house.

I can't wait to see it finished!

I bought this product, and inside the box the planks seem to be already joined together, do I need to uncouple them or install them already together,

            A:

Yes you will need to separate the planks in order to install them "individually"!
You can find complete installation instructions on the product page by clicking on the installation tab and then clicking on - Installation Guide.

        • Q:

I like the brazilian cherry flooring because of it's hardness (since I have 4 kids) and the cost. However, I would like a darker floor. Is it possible to stain this floor darker and get an aceptable result? I know that the unfinished oak can be stained easily but not sure about this one. Thanks.
Asked on 5/19/2013 by DIYer from Rome, GA

          1 answer

          • Staff Reviewer

            A:

The color of freshly milled Brazilian cherry is tan or salmon which oxidizes over several days or months to a deep reddish-brown, depending on the amount of sun exposure. Because of the instability of the color due to oxidation, and because one of the selling points of Brazilian cherry is its beautiful deep rich tones, stains that totally change the color are not recommended. A protective varnish is the only finish that you need.
As the color deepens with age, it becomes even more stunning and is the perfect choice for any room or space.

What is the best saw blade to cut?

And with Colorado's dry climate, how long is the typical acclimation period? (Existing home)
Asked on 1/24/2012 by blindrid from Castle Rock CO

          1 answer

          • Staff Reviewer

            A:

            I recommend a 60 tooth/ carbide tip blade.
All wood products are affected by environmental conditions, especially prefinished materials.
To control wood movement- expansion or shrinkage- it is recommended to acclimate the new flooring in the areas to be installed, not in (garages, U-Haul trailers, sheds, or tents) to normal lived-in conditions while in the boxes. If the products are protected in plastic then open the ends of the boxes. Length of time is not the determining factor. The goal of acclimation is for the core of the product to reach an equilibrium or moisture balance of the new flooring with its surroundings before installation or fastening. This balance could be achieved in as little as 1 to 5 days, or longer for some dense or oily exotic species.

            Avoid shocking the floor.

Just like you, wood actually performs best with consistent indoor temperatures of 60°-80° F and indoor humidity levels of 30% - 50%. Very dry or humid regions of the country usually require extended conditioning. Maintaining the recommended acclimation levels even after the installation should be viewed as ongoing floor care. Your doing so will help to minimize board movement, excessive squeaks, finish cracking and gaps.

Hygrometers sold in most Target and Wal-Mart stores ($10-$45) can be used to easily identify the need to regulate the humidity or air moisture.

In addition, to prevent board warping or bowing, do not cut the plastic support bindings on the outside of the packaging until ready to install. Store products flat, in a dry place. Provide air flow under and around cartons. Do not store directly on bare concrete or next to outside walls. Cartons should be placed as close to the center of the installation area as possible.

Proper jobsite conditions, acclimation and moisture testing of the subfloor along with the new flooring all works together for the success of the installation and is the responsibility of those overseeing the project.

          • CUSTOMER CARE

            A:

It's a very hard wood, 82% harder than Red Oak, so it doesn't dent easily. However dark floors show urethane finish scratches easier than light. Penetrating oils like Waterlox may work better. Prefinished flooring generally stands up to scratches better because of the aluminum oxide finish and UV light curing.
