Rift/Quartersawn 3/4" x 2-1/4" Red Oak Unfinished Select

Rift/Quartersawn
To make quarter sawn flooring, the log is first cut in quarters and then sawn perpendicular to the growth rings.  This cut produces a floor with a tight vertical grain which looks good and is very stable.  When quarter sawn flooring is introduced to changing humidity, wood expands and contracts vertically instead of horizontally.  This characteristic makes quarter sawn flooring an ideal choice for installations over radiant heat.

    Comments about 3/4" x 2 1/4" Rift/Quartersawn Red Oak Flooring:

I had this quarter sawn red oak installed professionally and it is absolutely beautiful. I was going for the old fashioned wood floor look that would be found in homes during the Victorian period, as my home is Victorian. We used a dark stain with red hues and it came out absolutely gorgeous. I couldn't have purchased a better wood for my formal living room and dining room. Now I want to put the same flooring in the parlor. That would make the look complete. Every time I walk into my house I just stare at the wood floors...they're so beautiful.

    Comments about 3/4" x 2 1/4" Rift/Quartersawn Red Oak Flooring:

I was told the only solid wood floor that should be installed over radiant heat should be a Oak quartersawn product. I have not yet finished the heating system and can not at this time comment on the performance of this product. It was easily installed over plywood sub floor. The product at this time is still unfinished. However, in its unfinished state it looks beautiful. I can only imagine how good it will look once sanded and finished.

    Service and delivery comments:

The delivery time was acceptable(about ten days). However, there was considerably more waste than expected. In addition, one bundle should have been trashed rather than sold. The store owner immediatly credited my account for the amount of this bundle, NO QUESTIONS ASKED. This loss of an additional bundle (20 sq ft) in conjunction with the unexpected excessive waste could have caused a considerable delay in installation, especially if you were to have the product professionally installed. The store owner then gave me the bundle in the event I could salvage some of it. Considering the problems encountered, and the professional way they were handled, I would still recommend this product, and Lumber Liquidators.

Remodel of 750 sf kitchen in 100+ yr home. Includes kitchen area with island, eating area, laundry, and 3 teenagers. All other house floors are original qtr-sawn red oak. This has a little less graining than original floors - but I love it! I had it professionally installed and they were amazed at the quality of the flooring.

          • Q:

Is the milling on this product (quartersawn Red Oak by Lumber Liquidators) as good as on the Bellawood Brand? We've had trouble with some brands, but never with Bellawood. Thank you
Asked on 10/22/2011 by Jim from Andover, NH

            • Staff Reviewer

              A:

The milling (finished height) on this unfinished flooring is not as precise as our Bellawood prefinished products and is designed to sanded down before the staining and finishing process.
