Comments about Williamsburg Butcher Block Co. 1 1/2" x 25" x12 lft American Cherry Butcher Block:

I bought two of the 12' sections of the cherry counter top. One was in stock and the next one came the following week. The counter top was pretty easy to work with. One side of the counter top is useable, the other side had larger gaps etc. but that was not an issue. All the edges on my pieces were nice and square. There were a couple dings on the pieces from strapping I am guessing but it was very minor and I was able to hide that beneath the tile backsplash.

There are plenty of fill marks on the product but generally they are very small. I noticed them a lot at first but now I never think twice about them.

The pictures I posted were of the product after one week of daily oiling. At first the two sections were different shades but they have blended nicely.

Overall I am very happy with the product. I bought it to spruce up the kitchen before we sell our home. I will be buying it for my next home as well!

Comments about Williamsburg Butcher Block Co. 1 1/2" x 25" x12 lft American Cherry Butcher Block:

I bought the 12 foot butcher block and had it cut into a countertop and a mantel piece for a new gas fireplace. I still have a narrow 5 foot section left and may use it for some kind of table. I decided to stain the pieces and apply polyurethane to match a laminate floor I had purchased for a newly finished basement. I'm not quite done with the poly but it is looking beautiful. Except for the weight and awkwardness of getting it to my house, I found the butcher block easy to work with and mostly ready for finishing on one side. I did need to sand it lightly and add some putty to a few cracks.

Was out of stock and took about three weeks for delivery, so plan ahead! Product itself was excellent, after oiling the colors really came out. Consider using Waterlox instead of mineral oil for long term water damage minimization (especially around the sink rim). tip: Use the scrap from the sink cut out as a cutting block & use the Danish/mineral oil finish only on this piece for actual food prep.

The butcher block countertops look nice except for the gaps between the end sections of the wood. Instead of having a tight fit, the glue has separated the pieces. It seems like a quality control issue.
They are very inexpensive though, so we were willing to overlook the imperfections for price.

                  Service and delivery comments:

Good service. The people at the Santa Rosa store are nice and took care of us.
The biggest issue was with getting a firm shipping date from the company when I ordered the product. When I asked for a confirmation of the shipping date, Dan was good at getting back to me.
Also, Rob the manager, was empathetic with the quality issues of the countertops and reduced our costs a little more.

So I ordered the butcher block countertops for a use as a desktop. I received them in good shape and applied a coat of walnut stain on the surface. It wasn't until I applied the first polyurethane coat and a light sanding that I noticed the "veining" left on the surface from the factory. I then had to sand the surface (and therefore removing the stain) a couple of times with a random orbit sander before I got a perfectly smooth surface suitable for stain. Like the saying goes "we do it nice- because we do it twice". Anyways the finish product was gorgeous and I got all sorts of compliments when I finished.

Two sections can be joined together.
                                  1) For a good glue edge bond; using a straight edge guide and saw recut 1/2"or so off one side of each piece you are joining.
                                  2) For center support and strength; Use a biscuit jointer or doweling jig, then wood glue the edges and bar-clamp til dry, re-sand. Add proper support to the completed counter to help support the seam joint.
Whether it will be detectable or not depends on the craftsmanship of the installer.
                                  Thank you for writing in.

If you want to stain the wood prior to oiling it, use a water-based stain as oil-based dyes will clog-up the wood's pores, thus stopping the oil finish from soaking in effectively.

Yes this product comes raw and needs to be sanded first. Yes this product can be stained. Thank you for your inquiry.

I am building a raised breakfast bar and want to do it out of butcher block. Does this have to go on top of a counter, or can I use it freestanding with brackets to hold it up? What does the underside look/feel like since it will be exposed?

Right now I have laminate countertops and I can take a pot right off the stove and put it directly on the countertop with no worries, can I do the same with butcher block?

For this real 'wood' countertop I would recommend using trivots or hot mats to prevent scorching of the surface.
