I did all the cuts and everything myself. We put a water sealer around the sink and on the underside where the dishwasher is, but everything else is coated with Tung Oil. This product is awesome and I will definitely be looking to purchase this again when I do my next kitchen.

I purchased over 30 of these tops to make desks for my office (we polyurethaned those) and I used two leftover tops to make an island in my kitchen, where I decided to use a food-safe oil. Be prepared to put at least 6 coats of mineral oil in the first week or so. The maple is pretty hard, but if you want a surface that will repel even the slightest of water rings you have to really keep at it at first. In no way is mineral-oil a low-maintenance sealant. You need to understand that this is not a high-end butcher block. It's made up of rather short pieces of scrap wood, and the strips are much narrower than you find in more expensive counters. Also, the variation in color is really pronounced, especially if you oil it. It ranges from dark brown to very white, and it's random nature is very busy. The look is more uniform if you merely seal it. There are some voids in the interior of the block when you cut through them that you may need to fill. Overall, these tops are are a bargain for the price, just don't expect them to look of perform like "classic" butcher block costing 4 times more.

Easy to cut to size, made two great counter tops. A light sanding, two coats of food grade oil, and it looks like, and performs like, the much more expensive ones.

Williamsburg Butcher Block Co. Pure Food-Grade Mineral Oil
Butcher Block Mineral Oil is a safe way to keep your butcher block countertops, cutting boards, wooden serving trays and wooden bowls looking like new.
Protect the surface of your butcher block by applying a coat of Williamsburg's food grade mineral oil monthly or as often as needed.
                              1. Make sure the butcher block is clean and completely dry.
                              2. Using a soft clean cloth wipe the oil over the entire butcher block.
                              3. Wait 20 minutes for proper absorption and then wipe off any oil that did not penetrate into the surface of the block or wood surface.
                              4. For new or worn surfaces, apply a second coat.
The use of this oil also helps prevent the wood from shrinking and cracking, a common occurrence with butcher blocks and other wood products used in food preparation.
Unlike vegetable oils, our Kosher certified, vitamin E enriched pure mineral oil effectively inhibits bacteria growth and provides longer lasting protection.

Hi there - in answer to a previous question you indicated that the individual strip width vary from 3/4" to 1".

Does that mean that in one 8lft length piece there are varying strip widths, or are you able to order a specific strip width for one piece?

Unfortunately you cannot order a specific width of the strips in butcher block.
The strips are relatively consistent @ 7/8" wide within a countertop, but bear in mind that these are produced from "trimmings" in the wood milling industry and it will vary depending on the availability of material.

This Butcher block is not a single solid piece of maple but is 3/4" x 1-1/2" strips glued together. When cut the new cut edges will look like the factory edges (no Particle) all wood construction.
