When to Install Hardwood and How to Protect It

How do I protect my new floor and when should my hardwood floors be installed?

If you're having a home built or just making renovations it is recommended to have the installation scheduled near the end of the project. Unfortunately, some contractors or builders may rush the hardwood floor installation and not realize the consequences until it's too late often resulting in major repairs or moisture issues.

To reduce moisture at the work site, all "wet" work such as painting or ceramic tiles should be completed. The (HVAC) Heating, Ventilation and Air-conditioning system must be fully operational.

When completed, fully cover the newly installed flooring with building paper. Avoid using short runners as this will cause surface coloration or fading issues. Paper products will allow the flooring to breathe.  Avoid fully covering newly installed glue down flooring with any materials as this can trap moisture vapor or condensation resulting in a cupped floor.
