How to Minimize Board Separation and Gaps

How to minimize board separation and gaps

Actually, board shrinkage is indicative of an indoor humidity imbalance.

Wood flooring after installation continues to expand and contract seeking to normalize itself with its environment. Ideally, relative indoor humidity 30%-50% with temperatures of 60-80 degrees should be maintained. The (NWFA) National Wood Flooring Association states; "Side edge cracks between boards are normal, seasonal and to be expected. Seasonal gaps that will allow a dime to fit are within standards and should close back during seasons of higher humidity". Wider planks 4" and wider can have bigger gaps during the drier season. Wide plank solid floors that have been acclimated in the summer months may require the use of humidifiers inside the home during the drier winter months.

Interestingly, the medical community has also stated that these same indoor environmental values should be maintained to promote a healthier quality of indoor air, a great benefit to sinus suffers.
